I've been a guitar fan for as long as I can remember and appreciate most guitar ranging from from classical to hard rock, so long as the instrument is in the hands of a talented individual who knows melody (even if only occasionally).
Listening to (and being blown away) by Roy Buchanan's "Sweet Dreams: The Anthology" got me thinking about what other guitar virtuosos I've not yet had the pleasure of discovering?
Would appreciate mention of artists and a standout track or two that come to mind.
To get the list going, some of my favourites, in no particular order, include:
Gary Moore - the Messiah will come again
Roy Buchanan (as of today!)
Neal Schon - late night
Snowy White - bird of paradise and his blues agency albums
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai - for the love of God
Marty Friedman
Tony Iommi
Tony Macalpine
Tommy Emmanuel
Steve Morse
Vinnie Moore
Yngwie Malmsteen
Steve Howe
Paul Gilbert
Patrick Rondat
Snuffy Walden
Mark Knopfler
Zakk Wylde
Craig Chacquico
Mauritz Lotz
Al Di Meola

Yes. The live acoustic version of big love is special. Kind of like Mark Knopfler, like the end of Sultans Of Swing, Alchemy style.

No list of modern guitar players is complete without Richard Thompson. A
complete master of acoustic and electric. Thompson is and has been a
tremendous influence on many (most?) rock and folk guitarists playing today,
including some of my other favorites like Bob Mould.
Standout albums:
"Shoot Out The Lights"
"Mirror Blue"
"Rumour and Sigh"
The new "RT" box set is outstanding.
Standout tracks:
"1952 Vincent Black Lightning"
"Shoot Out The Lights"
"Beeswing"

I would add:
Jimi Hendrix
Bill Frisell
Jerry Garcia
Phil Brown
Check out http://www.philbrownguitar.com/ for Phil Brown's music. I've really been enjoying "The Jimi Project".
