    Adaptec SNAP servers

    Dear All,

does anyone have any experience with the Adaptec SNAP 110 or 210 Nas boxes? I am currently looking for an upgrade from my Linkstation II (beautiful supermoddable but unfortunately now underpowered to run 6.5).
From their spec sheets I understand they run the Unix Guardian OS, with, respectively a 1Mhz and a 1.3 Mhz Celeron + 256 mb ram, I think expandable. They are sold as "whisper quiet".

Can anyone comment from personal experience?

    Thanks in advance,

    Giacomo

    Dear All,

    Just a little more info:

    and

    http://www.snapserver.com/Products/210.shtml

They are expensive, but also very powerful (1Ghz and 1.3Ghz processors running the guardian OS (LInux?))

    what do you think

if you have a *LARGE* lossless music collection and/or want to store audio and video then storage capacity may become an issue down the line. Also not sure whether slimserver can be installed on it to bypass pc, which would be a big plus for me.

    Re

I see your point about the 1TB storage limit, yet my collection is today only "high quality" mp3's. (about 9000 tracks, in total 65 gb).

Still, I am under the impression, that processing power is paramount (rather than simply RAM, as painfully apparent in the Infrant NV+ case, even with 1GB of memory...) if one wants to run the slimserver in its latest incarnations on a NAS.

I used to run slimserver up to version 6.3.1 on my LinkstationII mipsel (arm processor 400Mhz(?)), 128 mb of ram, and it was not what one would call "swift"!

I have abandoned hope to be able to run slimserver 6.5 comfortably on the Linkstation and have reverted to using it as a pure storage device, the slimserver being run from my PC!

Now, these machines seem to fit the bill, provided the memory is upgradeable.

Does anyone know upon which Linux distro Guardian OS is based?

    Cheers,

    Giacomo
