Exclamation yet another missing tracks thread

    hi,

i've just upgraded from my ancient but fully working netgear mp101 to a shiny sb3.

neither slimserver 6.51 or 6.5 seem to want to work properly on my xp pro sp2 machine. scanner keeps crashing and for some reason, i can't view localhost:9000 on the local machine but i can on another machine on the network. have downgraded to 6.31 and everything at least works properly.

the main problem is that i can't get slimserver to scan all of my mp3s. everything scanned properly on my ancient mp101 so the tags are fine and there are no drm issues.

i can browse the folders and add files that way so the files do exist !

i've tried setting the playlist directory to blank to see if that helps but to no avail.

    any ideas ? i'm stuck on 904 songs when i have over 10000 !

    thanks in advance.

Now... if you look in the event viewer you'll pretty probably see that
slimserver can't write some *.myd or similar file which is due to your
antivirus scanner blocking it. Have it ignore these files (*.my?).

If that wasn't the case, you should give us some more information about
the crash, at least the last message from the event log.

hi there - thanks for the input.

i've disabled my virus scanner to see if that halps - no such luck.

when i scan my files, slimserver stops and i have to restart manually - i'm assuming that this is nor normal.

here's the error from the event log :

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Perl interpreter failed.

    any ideas ?

    thanks

Hmm... not much of a help in this case. I'd recommend you run the scan
from the command line to see what's happening. Open a command window or
shell and run "scanner.exe --wipe -d_info -d_scan" from the slimserver
    folder.

If you're not familiar with DOS you might give the scanner GUI a try:
    http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30638

Once it stops post the last few lines of the output or log file so we can
    see why it crashes.

thanks Michael - i'll give it a try - I've tried to view the log when scanning but it's cleared when slimserver crashes. is there a physical file that i can check somehow ?

    thanks again

That's why you should run the scanner from the command line: after the
crash there will at least be a few lines in that windows.

    > is there a physical file that i can check somehow ?

I'm not sure, but I don't think by default.

    ok.

went back up to version 6.5 as i'm assuming that scanner.exe is particular to this version ?

started scanner.exe manually. an error dialog popped up after about 5 minutes - scanner.exe has encountered a problem, etc

no errors in the cmd line dialog - just the details for the song being added.

    event viewer gives :

Faulting application scanner.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module perl58.dll, version 5.8.7.813, fault address 0x00089994.

it looks like the scanner is crashing on certain songs so i'm going to re-run scanner repeatedly until i can identify the offending files. it's strange as the software that came with my netgear mp101 was absolutely dreadful and it had no problem with these files. :-)

on the brightside, i can now view slimserver via the web interface locally.

    thanks again

Please have a good look at those lines: they could be a pointer to a file
which makes scanner.exe crash. Post them here even if you think they're of
    no use.

pay attention to the files being scanned right before the crash. Then try to figure out what shall have been the next track scanned and try to see if there are any special character in the name, path or tags for that track.

    thanks.

i'm having to work through all of my albums, removing everythng that the software has a problem with. i've also noticed that songs are missing from some albums. none of the tracks have special characters as i've been meticulous about keeping my tags in order.

my first impression is that i'm not particularly impressed by the slimserver software i have to say.

    :-(
