Music stored in Public or Qmultimedia share (TS-101)?

Ok with the features coming out from Qnap and ones that are currently available like the UPnP server it seems to make more sense to have all the music file within the Qmultimedia share rather than the music folder in the Public share.

    What do you think?

    Hi Paul

Now there is a coincidence, as I have just installed the QNAP TS101 Beta 3.1 firmware with the latest version of Twonky as the streaming server. I have a Kiss DP600 media player and I have the QNAP streaming Xvid perfectly to it over a wireless network. It avoids having to copy to a DVD-RW or USB stick which is really useful.

I guess having music in the public share would be useful for streaming to other UPnP devices for some people, but I do not think I would use it personally. Still, you have to move with the technology and UPnP seems to be taking off.

So far the Beta 1.3 is robust, the only thing I had to do was change the port number on Slimserver as it uses the same as Twonky. However, I think my days of a sleeping TS101 may be over as it has not reverted to sleep mode yet, but I will keep you posted.

I'm not qualified to enter this poll! Not really understanding the difference or all this twonky stuff.

I think that before I go anywhere near my setup, I'd like some answers to the existing QNAP issues. i.e .....(4. USB memory stick support for SlimServer 6.5 running on TS-101. This is still very flakey but it does at least allow the drive to spin down (for all of you silence freaks out there) and does speed up 6.5 ever so slightly - work in progress)....

I'm with Seineseeker on this one - I am not really bothered where the music files are located on the Qnap (or qualified to pass comment), as long as the performance is maximised. The correct working of the spin down feature would also be nice (as Jerry's post above).

Twonky and other stuff that is coming from Qnap look at the Qmultimedia share for their files so in my view it would make sense to consolidate where the music files are held.

I'll get an update on the USB stick situation.

I guess I must be missing something fundamental here, but I use the Qmultimedia share for sharing photos over the web. Surely having my entire music collection sitting there will present a few problems...

    vote for public share

currently my preference is keep the files in public share. This is due to the fact that you cannot grant access rights for multimedia.

With other words, at the moment you activate multimedia server in QNAP you automatically allow all guests to also download your musicfiles. I see some issues with this as I dont want to run a illegal mp3 server.

My opinion would change in case individual access rights could be granted to multimedia and/or subdirectories of multimedia.
