Rave about the new Transporter Remote

OK, there is huge controversy about the SONOS remote, but I want to say that the new transporter remote is excellent. The circuitry and functions are not really any better than the existing SB3 remote (I think there is only 1 new button - sleep is that right?) but the form factor is drop dead georgous.

Firstly, thank you for finding true black (although is black best when the unit supplied is silver?)

Second congrats on the backlighting, the effect is really excellent

Thirdly, well done on the buttons - much better feel than the old remote

Fourthly, excellent idea to have the icons on the buttons....cool

Fifthly, excellent overall form factor and ergonomic grip

Finally, great layout - for example much better volume placement

Well done SD ....can you tell us who designed this masterpiece? For anyone who wants an upgrade $29 is a bargain (https://secure.slimdevices.com/order/upgrades.cgi!

Agreed, vast improvement over the old style remote.

However, I would like to have a setting to adjust the backlight time. I would like to increase the backlight ON time.

Ok. I couldn't get 6.5 to find my music. And 6.5.1 won't either. This is ridiculous. I specify the directory, the music is definitely there (easily found under other versions). What the H?

I was able to see the Transporter in the flesh for the first time at the London What HiFi show this weekend (and ordered one), so I've only played with the new remote briefly, but I am a little perplexed by the praise being heaped on the new remote. I didn't feel the layout was any better than the old SB remote, and it didn't sit in the hand any more comfortably. The backlighting will be useful if using it in the dark, but probably at the expense of battery life. Perhaps once I've taken delivery and used it at length my opinion will change, but for now I think it's "just another ordinary remote", no better or worse than the old SB remote.

Incidentally, unless I got the wrong end of the stick, future SB3s will be shipping with the new remote (minus backlighting).

    Update

One small correction the new buttons are not sleep but browse and favourites. I don't know if anyone wants to say how useful these are but they have potential in the software to the very useful with future releases of Slimserver.

BTW, I wouldn't disagree that the remote is an incremental improvement rather than a whole new ballgame....but for me its extremely welcome.

The backlit buttons are welcome, but I find that in the dark it would be more useful if the letters above the buttons were lit up.
Overall I like the new remote but it does not seem much a departure form the last one

I just ordered a new Slimserver 3 in the UK and ordered the new transporter remote direct from the US at the same time (which arrived first due to the SB3 being out of stock at the time and quick service from Slim Devices!)

I was surprised to find the remote that came with the SB3 was now the same form as the transporter remote but just not backlit, both look great.

The backlighting on the transported remote is very useful when listening with the lights dimmed and the new form is much better than the old style remote

I'm really surprised they went to the trouble of producing a non-backlit version of same remote. But I suppose margins are thin on the $300 Squeezebox and every penny counts.

That link above appears to be a little broken for ordering remotes. Try this one:

ajmitchell: The favorites button has been there since at least the SB3, although the browse button is totally new. I myself would find use in the latter, especially if I could map it to go directly to "Browse Music Folder", as that is my primary means of library access. I guess if I could do that I could probably map one of the existing buttons that I never use like "Search" or "Favorites". Hmm. Further investigation needed.

dean: The photo on that page has always bugged me, as the model is holding what appears to be a Sony remote. I imagine that it is just a stock photo from somewhere, but now that you have a snazzy new remote and hardware, you should put up a picture of them I think. (Not that I personally mind my old-school remotes and even my SB1, which are all still in use.) Apologies if that is not actually a stock photo, but rather an employee, someone's girlfriend, or wife, although if I were her I might be insulted at the filename (girl.jpg).
