Synology & SS, Thank you flipflip

I cannot find a DS-106x Synology Diskstation in HK, so I settled for a DS-106e. With flipflip's instructions, I had SS6.31 running in less then 10 minutes! I am posting namely to thank flipflip for his excellent work. I am not at all technical and cannot do any sort of 'hacking'. So I am really glad flipflip's solution works so well!

Question though, what is the 106x? Is it hopeless to run 6.5 on 106e?

    Thanks again!

The DS106X is a swiss version made by Brack Electronics and has 128MB ram instead of 64. Otherwise identical.

Yeah Flipflip is excellant - very encouraging and heplful.

    Thanks!

It's possible to install 6.5 on the DS-106e but it probably won't be usable. Just try it, you can always revert to 6.3.

The DS-106x is a special version of the DS-106 with added RAM. Unfortunately it's only available in Switzerland through the of importer (they had Syno produce a batch these because they promote the 106x with a Squeezebox in a bundle).

It should be possible to upgrade a DS-106 to 128 MB, though. I'm still waiting for someone to send me decent photos of the PCB of a DS-106 to confirm this. The DS-106e might be upgradeable as well.

    Regards,

No wonder I could find so little info on the 106x and not even on Synology's website!

Tell me what photos you need, I shall supply them to you.

    Once again thanks!

"We" (the community) are collection photos of all DS at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/gallery/DS10x-PCBs. Photos like these of a DS-106e would be very interesting. It's necessary that we can read the writings on the chips (so see which memory chips are used and all the other tiny details). A 2 MP camera should be enough.

You would have to open th DS, unscrew the board and take pictures of the backside of it. Both sides are interesting. Only do it if you feel brave enough to open the box! And watch for flares (if you don't have a tripod and can take the picture without a flash). If you cannot avoid flares, take several pics from different angles.

@others: Further DS missing (good) pictures of the board are: DS-106, DS-106j, CS-406

    Thanks.

Yes it is. I'll ask Tom if we may put it on the page.
