Running SlimServer on Windows 98SE?

In order to partially fund my purchase of a Transporter (yay!) I'm selling my SB3.

Due to my super salesman tactics, I've gotten an acquaintance very interested. Perhaps it's my offer of a free demo at his home using his equipment, free installation and free, perpetual product support that will no doubt come back to bite me on the keister.

Anyway, this guy is running Windows 98SE. That's a problem. I see a passing reference that you can run 6.1.1 on Windows 95 here:

so I assume 6.1.1 will run on Windows 98SE as well. Is that as far as he can go? That'll make new product features and bugfixes impossible, but once we shake out the problems it should be stable.

Something to bear in mind is that a Win98 machine is in the region of 6-8 years old (obviously). Even if slimserver runs, does it have enough memory/cpu/disk space to be effective?

Yes indeed, another good point, but my sales skills are already stretched here. I'm not sure if I can sell him on the idea of a new PC. ;-)

So back to the original question - what is the latest version that can run under Windows 98SE?

runnning SS on such a dated OS and related hardware might do your friend more harm than good, ultimately he might think SB3 isn't such a great idea, not good.

It's probably in the 4 or 5 region, if it's possible at all, bearing in mind
that I agree fully with the previous posters. What I'd do in this situation
is sell it as a Internet radio device only, and tell him that if he wants to
play local music, he should look on the SDI web page and buy the Infrant
deal.

Even if Slimserver can be made to run on the machine, it will beat the tar
out of Eudora and Netscape, making the poor guy's "I just wanna see my mail"
experience much less enjoyable.

He could run it on the existing PC, without touching his Win98SE
installation.

Hmm. I'm used to having SlimServer always on for me. We'll see if he goes for the idea of having to insert the CD and reboot his PC every time he wants to listen to the Squeezebox.
