where is the playlist file stored ?

    Hi All,

I have set a playlist folder in my music folder as follows:
    /home/gian/musica/playlists

I saved a few radio URLs as playlists, and they work fine.

However, my playlist folder is empty.
    Where are they stored ?

I would like to copy that file on a second server.

    thanks for your time,
    -Gian

Are you sure that you've saved your URLs as playlists rather than as favourites? The two are not the same.

    yes, I'm sure.
I did that because with SS 6.5 I am not anymore able to save them as favorites.
I followed the advice of another post, suggesting that it was the proper way to save internet radio channels.

Check the permissions on that directory, and what user is running slimserver. Initially I had a similar problem because slimserver runs under my imaginary user "slimserver", but I was the only user with write permissions in my playlist folder. I added slimserver to my group and gave group-write permissions to that directory and all is fine.

I thought that it might be a permission issue too.

When you are connected via the web interface from another pc, is the user Slimserver that is acting in background ?

In that case, user Slimserver has no write rights to /playlists in my folder, and it's pretty clear that the folder stays empty.

But where are the playlists stored then, since I can save them and browse the from the web interface ? Are they part of the db ?

Playlists should be stored in the directory you specify under Server settings > Basic settings > Playlists folder. It's directly below where you specify the location of your music library. They are also read into the db, but the playlist files themselves are saved in this directory. Do your playlists survive a clear and rescan of the db?

Darn ! they did not survive...
I'll try your advice and recreate the playlists...
anyway, I thought it might have been a security issue to let user Slimserver write in my folders...

ah, do you know the default password for user Slimserver ?
I installed the automated Debian package, and do not know how the user is setup.

ok, I've added user Slimserver to my group, gave it w right on the playlists folder, restarted SS, created new playlists and there they are...

still wondering about possible security issues...

I'll post a question on the Linux forum...

You're right to be concerned about security, but as you might have already guessed, my view is that this is a minor weakness that I'm willing to introduce in my system. First, if you've set it up correctly, the user slimserver can write in that folder and only that folder. So it can't leave a lot of crap all over your disk. Second, it's only going to misbehave if there's a bug or it's hacked. If you're behind a firewall, then the odds of getting hacked are pretty small. As for bugs, slimserver certainly has some, but not the kind where the program runs amok. Third, if your permissions are good on your music library, the user slimserver can only read them, not write them or delete them. So your most valuable files are protected.

As I see it, the biggest risk you (actually, we) run is that user slimserver will start writing files like crazy in that directory, until your hard disk is filled. Not pleasant, but not fatal, and not very likely either, imho.
