My computer is running "Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server Edition". In order to get Slimserver installed I updated "/etc/apt/sources.list" so that it includes "deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main" and ran "apt-get update" and "apt-get install slimserver" (as described in http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DebianPackage). Everything worked fine and Slimserver is now running without problems.
However, every now and then I run "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" to update the Ubuntu installation. A few weeks ago, I also got Slimserver 7.0 alpha in this way. Since then I never got an updated version of Slimserver although I can see in the http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly directory that it is updated regularly.
As the version of Slimserver 7.0 alpha that is now running on my Ubuntu box contained a firmware where the stereo channels are interchanged I would like to know if there will be an updated version of Slimserver 7.0 alpha that will reach my computer on the apt-get way? Of course, I can (and in the meantime I have) put a newer firmware that I extracted from a more current tar file into the corresponding directory to get my Squeezebox updated - but is it really that complex to also update the alpha versions? And when will "stable main" really contain only stable versions of Slimserver?

'stable main' now contains 6.5 (it's released and stable). If you want to
to track 7.0 use 'unstable main' in your sources.list. There was a brief
period where the .deb repository had the 7.0 .deb in the stable slot but
that was fixed several weeks ago. That's probably when you got 7.0. You
need to decide whether you want to track 7.0 or 6.5 at this point and choose
your sources.list based on that.

So I have two options:
- Use "unstable main" in my sources.list and continue with Slimserver 7.0 alpha
- Use "stable main" in my sources.list and go with Slimserver 6.5
Am I right if I assume that first I have to uninstall Slimserver 7.0 alpha before I install Slimserver 6.5? Or will my installation automagically revert back from 7.0 to 6.5, now that 6.5 is released and stable?Carsten

Yes, I believe those are your options.
Debian won't downgrade you automatically. You will need to 'apt-get remove
slimserver' and 'apt-get install slimserver' again to downgrade to
6.5(assuming you have 'stable main' in your
sources.list). Based on the builds you have installed, your existing
configuration should be preserved without any troubles.
Alternatively, just download the .deb and dpkg -i over top of 7.0, should
work fine.

I have only got stable main in my source list and with the latest update I seem to have got 7.0a. Is this to be expected now that 6.5 is official?

No, I don't think this is expected or correct. I know Dan's futzing with
the .deb's right now, maybe something got broken. I just tried myself and
didn't get an update.

I don't suppose anyone has a relatively recent copy of the 6.5 deb package? The version 7.0 I've ended up with is causing me some problems with plugins.

Please inform the plugin authors about these problems: Dan has removed
some legacy code from the trunk which can make plugins break. I had to
update mine as well (eg. MusicInfoSCR).

I've cross-referenced this post to the relevant authors.

I just want to inform you that 'apt-get remove slimserver' removed Slimserver 7.0 alpha from my system and 'apt-get install slimserver' installed Slimserver 6.5.0. The latter is now running without problems. For the sake of completeness I also updated the plugins I use (MusicInfoSCR, WeatherTime, AlbumReview, Biography, LazySearch...) and they are working, too.
