I have both the ReadyNAS NV (4 x 500Gb HD's) and a Qnap 500Gb. Both work very well with embedded Slimserver. Both have their pro's and con's:

Qnap - cute, silent, small but no RAID, slow processor, 500Gb
ReadyNAS NV - RAID, up to 2Tbyte, slightly faster processor, but noisy, utilitarian and upgrade to 1Gb memory desireable for Slimserver

In normal use there is nothing much between them.

    D-Link DNS-323

The source code for this NAS is available on the D-Link website. Would this allow access to the device to try and install Slimserver? Unfortunately the task is way beyond my abilities but it does look like a great device to use in conjunction with my new SB3.

The source code won't help you much if you can't get shell access as the root user. Maybe someone could hack the device to get the access you need to install slimserver, but you'd be much better off going with a device that has already been hacked and is well-documented (eg, Buffalo LinkStation or Synology DiskStation) or with a device that has some level of vendor support for slimserver (eg, Infrant or QNAP).
