6.5 looking good

I tried a 6.5 nightly out last night on my SuSE 10 box. The last time I had
attempted to run with the local modules and had some problems with
YAML::Syck -- this time, I just ran the Bin/build-perl-modules.pl and
renamed my /etc/slimserver.conf. I didn't upgrade firmware on any of my real
players or install any plugins, but I did use Softsqueeze and do a little
stress testing.

The system load is lower and the performance is markedly better than 6.3.1.
Fishbone works great and has lots of little usability improvements; I like
the gallery mode quite a lot. Nice work, folks! I'll probably switch my main
installation over and try the plugins when the next semi-official comes out.

Is now a good time to snag a nightly (i.e. how's the stability index)? The dhcp ip address fix is in 6.5 and I'd like to grab it for that.

I stayed away for quite a while after the scanner split, but I've been back on board for about a month now(using the deb package on Ubuntu Dapper Drake) and it's working like a charm. The only drawback is that there are still a few plugins that haven't caught up with the changes and don't work, but that list is rapidly shrinking.

Thought I'd add another 6.5 nightly success story to the pile..

I was fixin' to whine about some 6.3.1 performance issues and instead
decided to see how much things have improved with 6.5..

So I tried a 6.5 nightly this week on my gentoo sytem. Initially I had
a heck of a time getting the YAML::Syck stuff to work. I merged new
versions of those packages but it didn't really help. It kept barfing
when parsing config files.

I finally found this thread (for the second time - first time got me
interested) and using Bin/build-perl-modules.pl made all the
difference..

So far things are running smooth with no real new issues. It kinda
looks like a number of nagging performance issues seem better (woot!).

CPU consumption while playing flacs seems much improved (not that it
was ever an issue at only about 2% in the past).

Time will tell but looking pretty good!

I switched my main system over to the nightly a couple of nights ago, still
couldn't get YAML::Syck to compile. This time build-perl-modules.pl didn't
work either, but I still had the old install from August 10, so I just
copied its CPAN modules over instead. I've started to upgrade my plugins,
and there's some trouble with preferences, but this is still a very
promising beta build, and I'm glad I made the switch.

It's doing a full rescan right now, while a vmware workstation image
consumes 20 percent of the user CPU. Used to be that a full rescan would
send system load to just under 4.

In the same vein, a report for anyone considering trying out 6.5 upgrade.

I've installed a few versions of 6.5 over the last few months on a "test" server just to play with, but today was feeling brave so went for it on "production".

On WinXP SP2 Pro with about 7000 tracks, nearly all FLAC.

The process took an hour, and I now have (almost) eveything rocking as it should. This included downloading, installing (twice!), scanning the library (twice: the second one after I'd enabled multiple values in tags), upgrading softsqueeze on the server (twice - failed the first time, worked the second, no idea why), upgrading firmware on two SB2s, and catching up with sundry server settings (I chose to blast my old config and reinstall).

Two hitches, really: First, I left non-6.5 plugins in place, so 6.5 barfed on startup. Spotted this by looking in the event log. Removed all old plugins, worked fine.

Second, the web interface looked awful till I remembered advice here about clearing browser cache (in Firefox: Tools/Options/Privacy/Cache/Clear Cache Now).

After one hour, music playing in three places at once. Scan time just over 10 minutes. Only reminaing task - catch up on he plugins, which I guess might take a bit longer...

Oh, and there has been some commentary about Various Artists in different versions, so I'll just say that this function has always worked for me, and I have NO Compilation tags anywhere!

Is phase reversed with 6.5b1?

Just installed, and was comparing the sound of my external DAC vs. analog outs when I noticed the voices on the White Album would shift L->R when switching between the two. Reversing the red and black rca's fixed the problem, and gave the analog out's better central imaging.
