QNAP slowness

Hey guys, this isn't a Slimserver specific question but I'm having serious issues with the QNAP NAS and since I'm getting &$£#-all support from them (bodes well, eh?) and googling for "QNAP forum" beings me to here I wondered if someone would care to jump in.

Buoyed by the positive reports, I went out and bought two QNAP TS-101's with 400Gb Barracuda 7200.8 SATA drives. These are NOT the versions with Slimserver loaded.

Main problem is the dire write/read speeds. Write is about 7MBytes/sec (megabit speeds in other words, not gigabit. Significantly higher speeds are achieved in PC to PC copies across my network). Read - well, certainly on the Mac it seems to be outside iTunes' range of detection of whether files exist or not. As a result all my files in iTunes now appear as non-existent (even though if I double-click on them after a while the tune will start up) and consequently don't sync.

The other less major issue is the apparent complete lack of documentation on the printer sharing feature. I have no idea how to get it working.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

7Mbyte/sec is about right for one of these boxes.

Whilst it does have a gigabit ethernet port on it you are probably only connecting at 100Mbit.

Now I have a 10Mbit Telewest line at home and the fastest I can get out of that is 1Mbyte/sec so on a 100Mbit connection I would suggest that you would get around 10Mbyte per sec tops. Now taking into account overheads etc 7Mbyte/sec isn't bad.

I think the most I have had on mine is about 8.5Mbyte/sec

If I am wrong on this and anybody out there knows better please feel free to correct me.

The average seems to be 7. I can as you say get up to 8 or thereabouts but on sustained transfers of large files. With small files the transfer speed totally goes down the toilet. My network is running gigabit of course, as are my PC's. As you say the QNAP exhibits respectable 100MBit performance, but nowhere near gigabit level.

I tried the form (no response), Skype (no answer) and email (no response).

Time to say it was a mistake and move on with another Mac Mini + fanless HDD enc? Less than £200 for a gigabit, silent NAS enclosure - I had a feeling it was too good to be true.

I'd be happy to get 7 or 8 MB/s. Isn't a Wireless-G connection the limiting factor in achieving that speed ?

I'm experiencing significantly SLOWER speeds: a 700MB file is taking 40 MINUTES to copy to or from my TS-101. Why? No idea. But perhaps someone can advise.

The transfer taking 40mins sounds slow - another user of a QNAP made a post a while back about a similar problem and how they fixed it. Transfer speeds can also depend on the host system and the type of transfer (e.g. ftp, SMB).

We're talking about high end _SOHO_ NAS here. Real high end featue multiple Gb nics and use them.

BTW: the "winner" in that article is a Windows 2003 (thus PC technology) based system.

That chart shows the TS-101 with a throughput of 6.4MB/s, but I'm experiencing 0.3MB/s by my calculation. Something seriously wrong there! I've looked for this other post you mention, but can't find it.

By the way, I'm transferring the file via Windows Explorer, having set up a network share to the QNAP drive. I assume this should be as fast as any other way (ftp, etc).

Im getting around 2-2.5 mb/sec with ftp & and wlan, via netgear router, on a TS-101. Around 3-3.5 with cable. This seems slow to me, what can i do to improve performance? Im running slimserver, but seldom torrents (that really slows down the NAS)
