basic 6.5b1 MySQL question

I am trying to install the 9-July nightly of 6.5b1 on a LinkStation HG running Debian. I have been running the pre-MySQL versions of 6.5b1 without problem. The simple question is this: do I need to have MySQL installed on the box before installing the new 6.5b1?? The Debian install that I have is very bare-bones, and does not include MySQL, although it would be no problem to install it if needed.

Here's the error message I got when I tried to run build-perl-modules.pl Thanks for any advice.

You will need to install mysql-server, mysql-client, mysql-common and
libmysqlclient. Each of these will have a version number, like
mysql-server-5.0

Thanks. Is that libmysqlclient actually libmysqlclientX.X-dev, or just plain libmysqlclientX.X? It looks like I'm getting closer, although it appears I still have some basic MySQL configuration to do.

Installing the -dev version should also install the runtime version.

You shouldn't need to do any MySQL config. Once the base system is installed,
SlimServer will run it's own instance. It just needs the binaries & libraries
first on systems that we don't officially support.

Thanks for the reply Dan. Installing the 6.5 nightly is temporarily on hold for me, so I don't know if your information will get me all the way to the finish line, but I'm sure it gets me closer. Cheers.

No - seriously? You mean to get a perl script to chuck bits down towards my (non-slimdevices) mp3 player, I've got to install a bloody SQL server?

I've been using the May 22nd 6.5 client for a while, and just decided to upgrade. I was /that/ close to spending a portion of my "new job" bonus on a squeezebox - PLEASE tell me that it doesn't require a flaming RDBMS to *organise*my*mp3*collection*!

Slimserver 6.5 comes bundled with MySQL. You don't have to install
*anything* to "chuck bits" to your mp3 player.

You only need the stuff listed above if you are using slimserver on an
unsupported system.

What system are you using?

So does this mean that if i'm installing on an arm-based NAS device (using build-perl-modules.pl), I need to install mysql manually on the side? Is there any way of getting around using mysql? For NAS devices with limited space, the SlimServer seems not to be so slim anymore...

Correct. Is this a Linkstation Pro by any chance?

Not that I know of.

slimserver never was slim - it's the client devices that are slim. The
server does most of the work and just sends audio/display information to
the client devices and processes IR commands.
