http://www.mini-itx.com/store/ has about everything you need. I went the
slightly more expensive way of a slim case with 2.5" disk. It cost me
about USD 450.
> What are X and putty?
X is the X Window system, a graphical user interface for Linux/Unix. Often
there's talk about running server without X, which means you don't install
any windowing system. Just the naked command line. To access that command
line over the network, you need a telnet or better SSH client. Putty is
about the most popular SSH client program for Windows.

I'm not sure what the fascination is with putting a computer, quiet or otherwise, next to the Squeezebox. It's just another box cluttering up the listening room. The Squeezebox is a network device, after all. Why not just network to a server, noisy or otherwise, in some far off corner of the house?
But ... I'm just being a fly in the ointment. Ignore me, I'll go away.Jon Heal says:

Hey, some of us don't have a dedicated listening room. People are living
in one room flats. Yes, that does exist.

I did not mean to do so :-) (and me too, I'm lucky enough to have a room
for all the noisy computer stuff)

Please bear with me while I play catch-up here. Am I understanding correctly that SlimCD comes with the Linux OS as well as Slimserver, so if I have a machine set up to boot from CD, I don't have to figure out the Linux part? That would be absolutely awesome!

You got it: SlimCD is a so called live Linux CD. Just boot from CD and
you've got a slimserver up and running. Give it a try.

Will it handle an NTFS USB drive, or does it need to be FAT32?
