SACD is the warmest sounding cd format I have heard. But...since really getting in to SB and ripping my whole normal cd collection to FLAC my small SACD collection has been gathering dust. So I was pretty bummed to put my brilliant Sony DVP-NS999ES sacd player and SACD's up for sale this afternoon.
My days of showing my friends how incredible the sacd sounds are over...its all your fault Slim! Or...maybe it's Sony's damn fault for inventing an amazing format that is locked down to hardware.

ps I am happy that I can reinvest the $$ in more MFSL and DCC cd's though!![]()

SB is killing the SACD format! ;)

2006-02-26, 22:50 #2Funny, I was thinking the same thing tonight. I'm so glad I never invested in SACD or DVD-Audio, even though several years ago I seriously thought about it.

16/44.1 Sans SACD - DVDA
I am also one who put the hybrid discs aside for the plain old Redbook format.
I have dismantled my 7.1 surround in favor of pure audio, 2 channel sound.
Funny thing is that 7.1 was always missing the straight forward punch and clean that 2 channel analog provides.
SB3 has brought me full circle.
My surround system has been liquidated.
Bravo!

Count me in as one who dumped SACD since I got my SB3. SACD can sound very good but so can redbook.
I will also go out on a limb and state that redbook via SB3 with a non-OS filterless DAC sounds about 95% as good as SACD. Close enough for me.
Only bought a few SACDs, sold my Sony 222ES on ebay recently.

Horizons, do you have a NOS DAC? If so, which one? I recently purchased a Derek Shek NOS on eBay. I love the NOS idea.

Just sold my 999ES today (and 3 sacds)...I'm bummed...now I know what it was like when all of <cough> "mature" audio enthusiasts finally abandoned their turn tables...

Yes, I have two - a Monica dac and a Lite Audio AH. The Monica sounds great but has very low output. The AH has high output and sounds incredible IMH0. And it's under $200. A steal. I also used to own the Nixon which is also very good. I have heard good things about the Shek DAC. How does it sound?

2006-02-28, 11:38 #9Well, I've posted this story in another thread, but I got the DAC about a month ago, and then promptly fried the voltage regulators by mistakenly reversing polarity with an external power supply. Miraculously, in my opinion, Derek switched out the regulators, and it is now being shipped back. He's not even charging me for parts or labor, just the $9.00 shipping! Anyway, I will post my opinions of it when it arrives later in the week. I also recently purchased a Parasound A23 amp on audiogon, so that should be arriving too. I've got a lot of listening to do!

Parasound amps are great, I still use the HCA-1000A to drive my Maggie 1.6QRs. No need to upgrade.
