I'm wondering why SD doesn't just use the PCM1748KE from the outset, for 6db improved dynamic range.

I've been an electronics tech since 1978, and I run a calibration facility which also does repairs.
I would recommend that you NOT attempt to solder SMD's without proper training and tools.
It is extremely easy to totally ruin the devices you are attempting to solder.
At the very lest practice on something you don't really value, such as something that is already no good, something you don't really have an attachment to.
Certainly not your beloved Squeezebox.

If you look at the archives, Sean wrote that the PCM1748KE has better
specs than the PCM1748, but many of the actual PCM1748
are better than their specs.
So there may be no difference in sound in practice.
There is a difference price in practice.

This is a voltage out dac, and you can't stack voltage output dacs. You can only stack a current output dac.
