My audiotron (had) & my ipod (has) a spinny wheel for cycling
through long menus. My ancient Mitsubishi vcr has a spinny
"jog dial" on the remote... could a jog dial / click wheel work
for navigating the squeezebox?
When I navigate via the arrow buttons, I notice that sometimes
the menus are somewhat slow in responding; perhaps that slowness
would just be frustrating with a wheel input. But if it could
work as an interface, it'd be pretty slick.
Any thoughts?

"click wheel" remote?
You're not the first Audiotron owner to miss the
wheel:
