BeerCan, I'm not sure there is a pin-for-pin "new design" replacement for the LM723. Harris makes their own version of the same chip, but its specifications are pretty much identical.

If any of this was about specs everyone would just leave the 5V switcher on the SB3...

Power One has been making the same supplies for more than 20 years, and I don't think any significant advances have been made in IC regulation chips during that time. I could be wrong though....

Personally mine has been rock stable. I should put it on the oscope and see what its doing, but I don't really think it is neccesary. For the $2.50 I payed for them I am very happy.

Can you advise which model you are using from Power One?

    Volume setting

    Hi all,
I have found that the ideal volume setting on my SB3 is between 21-23. Settings greater than 23 seem to lose bass and highs, and pinch the overall sound and dynamics. The downside of this is my preamp volume must be set considerably higher to produce the same output than for the other components I have attached. This introduces the risk of blasting my loudspeakersif someone changes inputs. However, analog noise is not a problem. I am using the delivered power supply.

My questions for the group are would a power supply replacement enable a higher volume setting on the SB while retaining the audio quality which is superb at the lower setting? Is the limiting factor here the power supply or SQ's amplifier?

Your problem is one that is hard to make sense of, but I guess the answer is no, the power supply shouldn't affect the RCA output level.

Perhaps your preamp likes a lower input voltage, in which case you need attenuation (lowering the RCA output level) of some sort.

As an experiment you can go to player settings in slimserver and set attenuation to say 20db, then check volume settings 35-40 on the SB to see if you notice change...

    Power Supply Affects....?

I've read this and the other historical threads on power supplies, and now I am totally confused.....

So, I'm going to ask my question of the electrical engineer/audiophile types out there: Does a linear regulated power supply (vs. a switching-type, as included with the SB) affect the sound quality of the digital-out, the analog-out, or both?

I've seen it written both ways in these forums, hence my confusion.

    Thanks!
