Tags cut off in slim - Mp3Tag

    Hi

I'm getting some strange tags cut off problems with slimserver (running 6.2.1 on a NAS). I have edited the tags with MP3Tag and doen a complete re-scan, although they appear correct in MP3Tag, they appear shortened in slim.

I have noticed the problem with album titles and song titles.

    Any ideas??

Tags cut off in slim - Mp3Tag

Are you using ID3v1 tags? They have a 30-character
    limit.

Mp3tag will cache what you enter so it looks like
things are OK, but if you write ID3v1 tags, when you
exit the program and go back in, they will be cut off
    at the 30 character limit.

Since only 30 characters are stored in ID3v1 tags,
SlimServer will also see the cut off tags.

Change to ID3v2 and remove the ID3v1 tags.

Tags cut off in slim - Mp3Tag

BTW these changes are made very easily using Mp3tag
      configured like so:

It'll tell you which tags are ID3v1. Set it to write
only ID3v2 and remove everything but ID3v2, save all
the tags, then remove the ID3v1 tags.

Ok, you're definitely on the right track, I've told MP3Tag not to write ID3v1 tags. I'm concerned about removing the APE tags as I'm not sure where foobar and metaflac write their replaygain tags and don't want to lose that info accidentally. That is I currently have it set to write both ID3v2 tags and APE tags.

So - thanks for your help and one more queston - in what place are the replaygain tags stored and will they be left unaffected by MP3Tag??

Hmmm - if I have it set to 'remove ID3v1' under the options->tags->both of them, shouldn't it completely remove the ID3 v1 tags? I now have ID3v1 ID3v2 and APE all in the files...

          Odd.

Is there a way to tell slimserver to only read ID3v1 if ID3v2 is not present, or similar?

(as for replaygain in flac, this goes into vorbis comments I notice, so should not be changed by any tag operations).

Re: Tags cut off in slim - Mp3Tag

First, don't remove the APE tags because that's where
            ReplayGain data is stored.

To remove ID3v1 tags, first MAKE SURE you have the
data saved in ID3v2 tags. Since you now have both, it
            looks like you've done this.

Now press the Remove Tags button. I know, you'd think
that it removes all your tags, but if you've set your
remove preferences to remove ID3v1, when you press the
Remove Tags button you'll remove only your ID3v1 tags.

That's news to me. I have added RG tags to all of my tracks (using foobar) and I don't have any APE tags that I'm aware of.

Is it necessary to remove ID3v1 tags? If both v1 & v2 are present doesn't SB display v2 tags?

This is how MP3Gain stores ReplayGain data in MP3s.
ReplayGain tags in FLACs merge right in with the other
                tags.

I thought so too, but SlimServer didn't display more
than 30 characters for me until I completely blew away
                all my ID3v1 tags.

It seems to check ID3v1 tags first.

Ok the remove tag thing worked well. I still think the flac RG info is in VorbisComments - are these inside the APE tags then?

Re: Tags cut off in slim - Mp3Tag

I'm not sure where the FLAC RG data is. Mp3tag just
says "FLAC" regarding the type of tags used in FLAC.
Perhaps it is in VobrisComments. At any rate, the
FLAC encoder using the "--replay-gain" switch puts it
in the same place foobar does, because the tags are
                    visible and editable in foobar.

MP3Gain stores RG data in APEv2 tags in MP3s. If you
write ID3v2 tags with Mp3tag, then send it through
MP3Gain, you'll see the APEv2 tags when you open it in
                    Mp3tag again.

Incidentally you can see these tags with a hex editor.
Look at the end of the file.

Thanks Mark for your help. I'm repairing them all over the place and all seems to be going very well. If I knew the RG info was definitively NOT in the APE tags I'd probably remove those as well for the sake of having one, 'standard' format for tags but this seems to be working fine and life is too short to spend too much time on tags!

MP3Gain definitely puts RG data in APE tags - you can
confirm this with a hex editor.

Also try removing them with Mp3tag, then going back
into MP3Gain - the RG data is gone.

                        So yeah, just leave them.

BTW if you added those new columns in Mp3tag, all you
do is click on one of those columns to sort.

All the ID3v1s will be sorted together. Just
highlight them all and press the remove tags button.
                          Done in seconds.
