    Announcement: PlaylistMan plugin initialrelease

I've received a few requests for the FlagMan plugin to be released. I had a bit of a tidy up and renamed it "PlaylistMan". It's early days, but I thought it might be of benefit to some people even in its current state.

I've knocked up a quick web page. Go to http://www.hergest.demon.co.uk/Music/music.html and follow the link to the PlaylistMan plugin. For those remotely interested, I've also created a page listing my favourite 20 albums from 2006 ;-)

Instructions, etc, can be found there (although I knocked it up quickly and haven't proof-read any of it yet!).

    Hooray for PlaylistMan!

    Phil,

This almost passed me by, but I thankfully caught it after a speculative search. It's exactly what I was looking for! I can't overstate the pleasure at being able to save selected tracks to playlists on-the-fly when you have a very large music collection (and the ability to flag badly tagged tracks for modification later). One thing though... are the playlists saved as files? I have Slimserver pointing to a folder for saved playlists, but the custom playlists I have added to your original list do not appear there. In fact, I can't find them anywhere. I assume it would be useful to back these up?

    Hi Philip,

Thanks for this, I like it and I'm sure it will be very useful.
I did change Bad Music to Bad Rips though, I thought it sounded better.

You're right, that does sound better.

I've been trying to fathom out how the array prefs work by reading through other plugin code. I thought it would be easy to configure a simple array of playlist names (strings) in the slimserver settings->plugins page, but I must be missing something, as all attempts have failed so far. Once I've figured that out though, anyone will be able to define their playlist names without diving into the code.

Thinking about this some more, for my case Bad Music is still more useful for me most of the time, as it was used to represent tracks that I've ripped that I simply don't like. Eg. for that one song on a ripped album that I can't stand and would rather delete from library than have to skip each time it comes on. It's a bit more generic, so eg if I stumble across some duplicate tracks (singles ripped from various compilation albums), I can mark one as "Bad Music" meaning "delete me".

"Bad Rips" is perhaps better if you are not using EAC or equivalent to do safe rips from CD. I have discovered a few of these in the past, but less frequently now I use EAC.

I think I'll leave the configured default as "Bad Music" rather than include too many specific playlist names configured. Or maybe change to "Tracks to Delete"?

    added functionality to playlistman plugin

I added a small modification to the playlistman plugin. It nows allows you to add the currently playing song to any of your playlists.

This is only a beta and it has a few small things that still need to be sorted out.

I would like to add the ability to create a new playlist on the fly with only the selected track but haven't gotten that far.

Thanks to Philip Meyer for creating this great plugin. I never knew how truly great this plugin was until I started using it.

It's pretty basic at the moment, but I'm hoping to make it a bit nicer

Not yet - it only stores the playlist in the Slimserver DB. One way of forcing it to disk though is to go to "Browse Playlists" and apply a change to the playlist (eg. rename it) and then press "Save". This will cause SlimServer to apply the change to the DB and also save to the slimserver playlist folder.
