Clicking on the author's name when viewing a message in the archice does
a nice mailto, but it doesn't do threading correctly (which is why
there are two threads titled Sorting of archive).

No, that is correct. Your second "Sorting of archive" message does
not contain a In-Reply-To header (or a References, for that matter),
which indicates that it is the beginning of a new thread rather than
a reply to an older message.
