That's got JVC's hybrid digital amp in it. I'm running a JVC 201 which has the same amp design in a 100wpc receiver. It sounds fine as well and is under 200 bucks now.Originally Posted by ianjohnson_nz
General consensus is the Panasonic class D amps sound best if fed direct digital input, because the Panny receiver does not convert the input signal to analog but sends the digital audio direct to the amp chip[1].
So the Panny's are "special" for having an all digital signal path. Whether or not it sounds right for a given listener is a matter of taste.
The JVC's are known for sounding great with analog input, though they can run a bit warm.

You could get a Sonic Impact T-amp for $30, and put a pair of the new hemp-cone full range drivers ($180) in a simple box. I would be jealous of you- and you'd save $300.

Here's a comparison shot between new and old if anyone cares:

I think you should get a 2 channel amp, not a receiver.

Any reccomendations for bathroom ceiling speakers that may work well
with this amp?
All the ceiling speakers I can find are of low sensitivity. Does this
matter? I am not expecting great (loud) sound from tiny speakers in an
all tiled room!

hempcone drivers:
http://www.hempacoustics.com/products.html
they have a FR chart posted for the 8" wide range driver, but not much else (no rec enclosure). Omega makes a boxshelf model that uses this driver. They're really new- so not much support in the DIY community...
I have the fostex FE206e (bananna-pulp cone) with the same type of whizzer cone. I just threw them in a 45L box, wired straight to the amp (tube) with no crossover. I couldn't be happier, or I would buy the hemp drivers.
The caveat is that you WILL need a sub with these drivers, and they are ruthlessly revealing of your amp and the recording.
OTOH, if you thought streaming your flacs from a disk was a revolution- you should hear the dynamics/phase coherence/pinpoint imaging available by simply losing the crossover.
There is more than one audio revolution happening...

But if you don't have 20k for speakers- why not try the hemp cone drivers I recommended? They are rated 94db (between 500 and 2.5k hz)
Lots of people seem to like fostex as well...
You actually _should_ expect great (loud) sound, from a tiled room, even if the speakers aren't very efficient . It may not be great (sounding) though. You should use lots of towel racks (with towels on them)to absorb some of the reflected waves.
