    Rumors of new device?

    Hey Folks:

My SB2 is so cool I need another one for downstairs. Are there any baseless, unfounded rumors floating around about some new SqueezeBox? Or should I just go ahead and place my order? :-D

...and if there were new features, what on earth might they be? Better display? Video support? I'm actually hard pressed on how to improve on the SqueezeBox 2, other than perhaps extending it to become a video jukebox.

    Baseless and unfounded? Sure!

The Squeezebox 3 is due out before the holidays, and will feature the following improvements over the Squeezebox 2:

    * PlaysForSure support makes it compatible with Napster, Rhapsody, and Yahoo Unlimited

    * Fairplay support to allow iTunes purchases to play, which will last until the next point release of iTunes beefs up security again

    * Component and HDMI outputs to enable streaming HD video; this won't be enabled until SlimServer 7.0, but with 6.5 (which will be available upon release) it will support photo slideshows and music visualizations on your HDTV.

    * 802.11 pre-n wireless network adapter, firmware-upgradable to the final 802.11n standard; the wired port supports gigabit Ethernet.

Pricing is expected to remain unchanged.

Also, for the first time, Slim Devices is planning multiple SKUs. In addition to the regular Squeezebox 3, they'll also offer:

    * The Squeezebox 3D, which has a 2-color red and blue display, and comes with two pairs of 3D glasses. ($50 upgrade)

    * The Squeezebox Ti, which replaces the plastic casing with anodized titanium; can be optionally laser engraved with a 50 character message. ($100 upgrade, $50 extra for engraving)

    * The Squeezebox Audiophile, which comes in a 19" rack mountable case. The power supply is hugely upgraded, all electronic components in the audio chain are replaced by more expensive equivalents, the display and Wi-Fi parts of the device are placed on the opposite side of the case from the audio processing bits (with significant shielding in between to prevent interference), and the margin is significantly increased to be competitive with other audiophile gear. ($2000 upgrade)

That should be baseless and unfounded enough for anybody, I'd think.

I really haven't heard any rumors. There's speculation that the
recent price drop indicates something. Who knows?

I think it depends on whether it is the black or gold plated edition.

The gold plated edition comes with a bonus CD of:

From a personal perspective, I would love to see an audiophile version in a better case.

However, from a business point of view, I think one with a built in digital amp (like the Sonos) would sell better both for me and for slimdevices.

    Or both, please!!!!

Shoot! I was hoping the audiophile version would be at least $3k. I guess I'll pass until they come out with something better. ;-) - Pat
