Hi,
I've just gotten a SB2 primarily for internet radio. I'd like to start ripping cd's but onto an external hard drive that I will use as a backup. If the hard drive is powered up but the pc is off, can the SB2 still play songs from the hard drive?
Sorry if this is a totally stupid question - not many people here use devices like the SB so not many people know...
Thanks.....

No. The squeezebox is essentially a 'dumb' device. It needs to talk to some
kind of server to be able to play music. This is either SqueezeNetwork, or
the SlimServer software running on your PC.

the short answer is...
No. You need the slimserver to be running on a pc on your network that has access to the hard drive with you music ripped on it. The drive doesn't have to be attached to the pc directly but needs to be on the same network.
The long answer is that there are a few stand alone network drives that have what amounts to an operating system on them and you can run slimserver on the drive (Buffalo Linkstation for example)which means you dont need a pc. But I doubt that is what you are after...
