Recommended Solution for Sharing FLACs w/ MP3 Players

Title pretty much says it all.  My collection is ripped to FLAC on Gentoo (no NFS or Samba enabled yet), my GF has an MP3 player and I want any easy solution for loading transcoded FLACs to it (don't want to keep them around after the load).

Recommended Solution for Sharing FLACs w/ MP3 Players

I use foobar2000 to convert a group of flacs to mp3 on demand. I delete the
mp3's after I've used them. I recently got a Rio Karma, despite its known
issues, so that for MY use, I can just download the FLAC files. it was the
only player that I found that would play FLAC files directly.

I decided that it was worth it to just mirror my FLAC files in mp3. The entire mp3 mirror at --preset standard takes up less that 1/4 the space of the FLAC library. Then I don't have to go through any particular gyrations to quickly load a few dozen odd mp3s onto a portable player as I'm running out the door.

How did you create the mirror? There's a few of us trying to do this sort of thing at the moment.
Some people think the title of this song is irrelevant,
    but it's not irrelevant - it's a hippopotamus.

Download and install dBpowerAmp Music Converter at:

    http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Use the program's file selector to choose all of your flac files and let the program convert them en masse to a separate folder or drive.

I have lossless files on a USB external drive with mp3 files mirrored on my main drive.

Does dbpoweramp preserve file structures? Does anyone know if foobar2000 does? I'll fiddle with these over the weekend.

    Cheers,

    Max

I believe this product lets you select the FLAC files you want to send to your MP3 player and then will do the conversion on the fly and convert them to MP3 for your player. This allows you to not have to mirror your FLACs as mp3s. A downside of this is that it is windows only.

    **********

Yes Max it will preserve file structures. I have my lossless files stored in a directory structure, i.e., Artist\Album\Songs and by default dBpowerAMP will preserve that structure but the program may be configured otherwise. Be sure to use the "dmC File Selector" portion of the program for mass conversions. Excellent directions and examples are included on the website.

Being a Karma user myself... what would be these "known issues"?

they use an Hitachi hard drive, which seems to have a known problem with the
read arm getting stuck to the platter. On some units, the drive will lock up
on occasion and requires a reset by paper clip, or even hitting it hard. I've
only run into the problem twice in 4 months of owning it, and one of those
times did actually fix itself (and showed a message about a corrupt file, so
I'm not sure it was really the same problem). Definitely not a device you want
    to take jogging
