iTunes reload library vs rescan library

Hi,

a general question about the use of iTunes: could someone explain the
difference between "reloading the iTunes library" and "rescanning". What is
happening in the background.

The difference between the 2 is not clear to me and then I am not sure about
the effect of the parameters that controls them.

There is a reload iTunes library interval (default 60 sec) and a rescan library
plugin the allows to schedule a rescan. If I turn the rescan scheduler on, do I
still need to reload the iTunes library? There doesn't seem to be a way to
schedule a "reload of the itunes library" or trigger it manually?

the itunes xml file is tested regularly to see if it has been changed. If at
any time, a change is detected, then itunes is 'reloaded' after the itunes
reload interval has passed since the last reload. To trigger, just change
something from itunes. There is no need to schedule.

A scheduled rescan via the plugin does a complete rescan of all data sources,
which may or may not include itunes, depending on the server settings. With
6.0, the db does regular, ongoing checking of valid files, cleaning out stale
data, and importing new data on browse folder. The moodlogic, itunes and
musicmagic all have checks to refresh their data is changes are detected in the
course. As such, the need for a scheduled rescan is, for all intents and
purposes, a thing of the past.

thanks, if the database rescans all its sources on regular basis (with 6.0)
including iTunes (if it is used), is the reload of iTunes still needed?

Will you also get rid of the rescan plugin if it is not needed anymore. Having
parameters that are not really needed anymore may be a bit confusing.

We do not automatically rescan if you are not using any importers, IE: a Music Folder only.

So the Rescan plugin is still needed.

it cleans up stale data, looks for new files on browse, but if you change your
itunes data from the itunes application, you will still want the reload to be
happening. However, if you are not impatient, you can always set the reload
interval to a long duration.

that's not really up to me. I've never actually felt there was a need for it.
Some users liek it have it, even if it may be just as a security blanket
