SB without server-side software? A SB controller /= IRremote?

Running the SB without slimserver/equivalent is possible? I believe that I
found a post that said it was, but there were issues that needed to be
    considered.
Reason I ask is because I [will] have a storage device that is incapable of
running the software. It has a MAC and IP and its possible to share a playlist
on the disk. (Its called Aireo2 if you are interested)

Second question: Are there other options as to controlling the device much
like how you would control it with the remote (i.e. simple buttons) other than
    a computer interface?
I would like to hide the SB and control it from my car's HU. I can build an
adaptor but would much rather find out if someone "invented that wheel" first.

    Thank you,
    William H.

The Omnifi DMP1 is going to be a better automotive solution for a number of reasons. Not the least of which being that the Squeezebox absolutely needs slimserver in order to work. Virtually every single action of the squeezebox is explicitly controlled by slimserver: everything that the squeezebox displays, and all its behavior and sound is impossible without slimserver. The squeezebox is dumb by itself.

The DMP1 is built with a good interface with interacting with your music, and already conquers the turn-on/shut-down problems inherent in car setups. Additionally, it's able to synchronize with your pc via wireless while your car sits outside. As much as I love the squeezebox, getting it to work well in a car setup could be a nightmare (also consider that every time a squeezebox loses, then recovers power it goes through its network setup routine).
