    AlienBBC V0.92 problem (Mandrake 10.1) - N.B. long email

    Hi

I recently moved Slimserver from Windows to Linux and all was well
including AlienBBC V0.12 (which is brilliant BTW thank you to everyone
involved with the plugin). However, I have recently 'upgraded' to
AlienBBC V0.91 & V0.92 and cannot get them to work. From the slimserver
AlienBBC appears to start but either:-

    1.

    plays with no sound or

    2.

with no sound until 5-10 seconds into whatever is chosen and then
after a short pause it appears to re-attempt to play the stream
from zero seconds again and then this loop just continues with no
    sound.

With my very limited knowledge of Linux (I'm using Mandrake 10.1) I have
tried to investigate further. I have tried running ./slimserver.pl
-d_plugin and get the following output:-

    2005-01-18 12:10:37.4025 Requiring Plugins::RadioIO plugin.

    ===========================

This didn't tell me very much so I tried to run mplayer on it's own as
it is called from slimserver i.e. mplayer -vo null -really-quiet -cache
    128 -af resample=44100:0:1 -ao p
    cm -aofile /dev/fd/3 rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio2/r2_radcliffemon.ra

Again no sound but looking at the -ao/-aofile options I saw that the
/dev/fd didn't exist is this unusual? By removing the -ao/-aofile
options mplayer works fine. I tried (probably naively) to create the fd
directory and use touch to create an empty file called '3'. Rerunning
mplayer with '-ao pcm -aofile /dev/fd/3' there was still no sound from
slimserver but the '3' file does fill up and if I subsequently run the
command 'mplayer /dev/fd/3' I do get sound.

Can someone please suggest what I should try next?

    Thanks

    Lawrence

I am using a Mac, and the old AlienBBC (0.11)

I found a program playing with no sound today (first time I have had
any trouble). A bit of juggling got the program playing. I quit
mplayer (for some reason there seemed to be three copies running),
and then tried again and all was well.

Meant to mention that with AlienBBC 0l.92 running on the 5.4 latest
nightly on WinXP, I see multiple copies of mplayer running - I have five
at the moment, only one of which shows any activity in Task Manager.

    Lawrence

Mandrake 10.1 should include /dev/fd - this is a special file directory which creates filenames for filehandles. Please remove the
file you added and try the following:

    Could you do:
    ls -l /dev/fd
    should see something like:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jan 16 18:31 /dev/fd -> /proc/self/fd/

    If so try:
    echo hello > tmpfile
    cp tmpfile /dev/fd/3 3>&1 1>&2

Do you see "hello" on the console - if so the /dev/filesystem works OK.

I was wondering about those. Yes, there's one of them for each mplayer.exe.

One other point; on 0.92 did you eliminate the "Connecting ..." message
when selecting an AlienBBC channel? The display on the SB now doesn't
change when I press the Play button; the channel just starts playing
    after a few seconds.

There is a bug in the Plugin.pm module - go to the bottom and you will
the lines "EN Connecting..." before the EN there should only be a tab
but there is actually a space then a tab, delete the space and it will
display the text ok. I think Jules is fixing or has fixed this.

    Neil: Yes, that was it.

mplayer/socketwrapper are not being terminated when slim.exe is shut
down. I'm running slim.exe from the command line for the moment, and
when I stopped it to do the fix on Plugin.pm, mplayer.exe and
    socketwrapper.exe remained running.

    Fast Forwarding within a file

I often record live radio streams for later playback. Is there a built-in
function or plugin that I'm unaware of that allows you to Fast Forward
    within a file?

There is a song scanner plugin available here:
    http://www.deane-freeman.com/slimserver/

It allows you to navigate to the plugin while playing a long track, you then
have a BAR graph on the player display that represents 100% of the track
length. UP and DOWN arrows adjust the position within the file, and you can
see the exact time index on line 1. leaving the plugin by pressing LEFT will
move the current song to that position.

It works with long MP3 or WAV files, but suffers the same limits when it comes
to transcoded formats. The time index is not something that the server has
available when sourcing from the external trancoding processes, so the scanning
    does not work.
