USB 3.0 to SATA docking stations

Sorry if this is a bit off topic. I have been using a WD 2TB USB drive containing my music collection, movies, etc with by Raspberry Pi 3 running LMS. It works fine with no problems for a year now. With no evidence at all, I do wonder if these cheap consumer USB drives are built to last and whether SATA drives are of better build quality. Of course I keep backups and yes, I can easily swap the drive if it breaks, but somehow, I value quality more as I get older. Does anyone have any views on this and or experience of using a USB to SATA docking station?

    Regards

    Jerry

If you open an external USB drive you will often find a sata drive and a converter chip for USB. So quality wise a docking station will not change much.

and around 5 years seems to be the life I get from WD NAS / USB drives.
Have had 3 fail around that time period.
I don't know if they are better or worse at the moment.
My oldest live one is now from April 2013 ... so I think I should be getting another one and copying things over in next couple of months.

Yours / others may well last much longer - I guess it depends on usage, whether or not the power down function works, temperature of location, number of times knocked of shelf and a big chunk of luck.
