Logitech Media Server, Duet and Podcasts

    Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me.

    I am running Logitech Media Server 7.7.5 / r1416570306 and I have a Duet.

Recently, I have enabled the Podcasts Plugin (Ver.1.0). I have identified the feed for a BBC Radio 4 programme, 'More or Less' clicked on 'Settings' and added the feed to the feed list. Now, if I open up the web GUI and navigate to 'Extras' I see a sub-menu for 'Podcasts'. I can click on this and I am then presented with a list of 'More or Less' podcasts. I can select and play any of these through the web GUI, and if the duet is active, I will have sound through my music system. While the podcast is playing, the ident for the podcast is shown on the duet controller, and the time bar advances as the podcast is played. However, my issue is that I do not have a 'Podcast' option listed on the Duet controller. Hence the only way to control the playback of the podcast is through the web GUI. Is it possible to add an icon to the Duet controller under the 'Extras' tab (where it appears in the web GUI), such that I can control the playback of the podcast through the Duet controller?

I'd be grateful for any help that anyone can offer on this.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Kind regards,
    Chris

Podcasts in older versions is rather confusing: some UIs would need
podcasts to be configured in LMS' settings. Others would require you to
go to mysqueezebox.com to configure them.

LMS 7.9 has an improved Podcast implementation which unifies them.

    Hi Michael,

    Thanks for the response.

Do you therefore suggest that I update to LMS 7.9? If so, what is the latest stable version that I should install, can you provide a link, please and will it install directly over my current version of LMS? In addition, I use Erland's Custom Browse plugin and have generated menus for Composers, Popular Artists, etc. I'd like to be sure that this functionality would still be supported in LMS 7.9, before I change. I am running Windows Vista.

As you can tell from the above I'm very much a novice where LMS is concerned, and I've only investigated the podcast option due to the recent loss of the iPlayer Extra functionality.

Apologies for asking so many questions, and thanks again.

    Kind regards,
    Chris

I personally believe 7.9 is the best LMS ever ;-). But it's not
officially supported. No problem for you, as you're here in the forums
    anyway.

There is some funky interaction going on between Erland's plugins and
7.9's Fulltext Search. But I don't remember which of his plugins
experienced that issue. If you encounter any issue using yours, then
disable the Fulltext Search plugin in LMS.

And yes, you can simply install it on top of your existing installation.

An alternative approach is to configure the podcasts on mysqueezbox.com,
too. This way you would have it with 7.7.x on all interfaces.

    Hi Michael,

Just to clarify, I can download the Windows executable, run the programme and it will install 7.9.0 over my current installation? No special instruction required, or clean install? Also, as regards podcasts, will they appear in, and can I control them from, my Duet menu (which was the reason for upgrading in the first place)?

I'll probably leave this until the weekend when I have more time to spare (in case of any problems), and thanks for your continued help and support.

    Kind regards,
    Chris

Yes. It should keep all your settings etc. A new scan will be triggered
due to some changes in the DB schema, but that's it.

    Do a backup anyway.

Yes, with 7.9 you should see the same podcasts on all your devices and
UIs (web, Controller, mobile app etc.).

    Hi Michael,

Thanks again. Just a question - you mention a backup: what do I need to backup and how do I do it?

I'm looking to be ready to implement this at the weekend thanks to all your help!

    Kind regards,
    Chris

Besides the data stored on the NAS (which, I'm sure, you've already
backed up!)? The LMS prefs folder (see Settings/Information for its
    location).

    Hi Michael,

Installed 7.9.0 over the weekend. All preferences were retained, and my custom browse menus work fine. Podcast support is much improved and better integrated.

As you said, 7.9.0 really is the best LMS.

Thanks for your tireless work supporting the community and for all the assistance you've given me.

    Kind regards,
    Chris
