Another zone | Squeezelite or something else?

    Dear all,

need your expertise on the following:

in my living room I use a Pi2 w PicorePlayer and a Syno NAS on which LMS 7.9.0 is installed (and all my music is stored).

Now my thinking is to use my WIN 8.1 Notebook with an external USB Dac connected to an active speaker (nothing fancy) at my patio (Notebook and Pi2 should be "synched" then). I donīt strive for HighEnd sound but it would be nice to listen to the same songs as from the living room system ;-)

    Questions from my side are:

    i) will "Squeezelite" (as described in http://forums.slimdevices.com/showth...8-step-by-step) do the job?
ii) if the answer to i) is "Yes" can I also control this "patio zone" via Orange Squeeze (which I already use for controlling the Pi2)?

In case Squeezelite is not the right choice for my intention what would it be?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Cheers,
    Markus

I would install Squeezeplay on your notebook, it acts as a Squeezebox, you can control it with you Orange Squeeze, web browser ect.. It also has Squeezebox Touch style user interface, and you can control all your other players with Squeezeplay.

LMS 7.9 on a Raspberry Pi 3/piCorePlayer 3.20, playlists and LMS cache on a USB stick, 25K+ music library on a WD MyCloud network drive,
    Rasberry Pi 2/piCorePlayer 3.02 > HiFiBerry DIGI+ > AudioEngine DAC1 > AVI DM5
    Raspberry Pi 3/piCorePlayer 3.20beta7/HiFiBerry DAC+ > Cambridge Audio Minx 5 (study)
    Rasberry Pi 2/piCorePlayer 3.02 > HiFiBerry DAC+ > Sharp micro system (garage)
    1 x Boom (dining room) - 1 x Touch (used for display and controller only) - 1 x SB3 (spare) - 1 x Radio (spare)

Many thanks for your swift response.

Tried it. Downloaded the latest win exe file, started it and pointed it during the setup process to my NAS. Bingo.

As you mentionend I can access it via the SBT user interface and could also synchronize it with the Pi2.
At least songs with sample rates up to 24/192 are synchronized correctly.

With dxd files itīs rebuffering all the time; dsf files wonīt be played via Squeezeplay.
Hence I assume the audio output is not set correctly since my USB dac is capable of playing those songs.

Most likely this is set somewhere else then in the SBT-like-GUI, right?
Guess I have to dig a bit deeper into that post here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showth...l=1#post718893

Canīt figure out currently where to change those mentioend "User Environment Variables".

    Thanks so far.

As an alternative without an notebook:
buy another raspberry pi with picoreplay + WLAN + dac + active speakers
and a cheap android 7" tab (i bought mine for 70€: ODIS Miro, actual ODIS Nova 7)
squeeze control app from logitech is also available on the google play store

I still have my SBT boxed (will use it for my little daughter when she is a bit older) :-)
Orange Squeeze is already running on Nexus7 and Samsung tabs ..hence Iīm not in the market for additional "gadgets".

Thought the Notebbook approach is handy and even if I donīt get it set up properly (to play all files inlcuding dxd and dsf) I guess I will use it.
But would be nice though if all files will be played correctly (as via the Pi2 in my living room system).

Right click on the windows start menu, choose System, click Advanced systems settings and at the bottom there's a button labelled Environment Variables

    Thanks Ralphy, found it.

Using the squeezelite-win.exe -l command the following output devices are shown:

Now my question is which one I should use? #3, #8, #11, #13 or #15?
I tend to use #15 since it seems to point to the correct driver (but maybe Iīm mistaken).

Although Iīm not sure why there is sometimes "LH Labs Geek Out V2" and then also "Geek Out 2A Signature 1.5" mentioned.

Alright ..I went ahead and used the details from "#15" and added them to the "Environment Variables".
Also used a value for sample rate:

While dxd files seem to be played now (playing time in the GUI is running) I donīt get any sound while choosing Squeezeplay as the player.
DSF files still wonīt be played at all.

    Further digging required ;-)

Only [MME] and [Direct Sound] devices work with SqueezePlay and DSD is not likely to work with these as they modify the bits. If you want to use the other devices, use squeezelite which you can setup as a windows service and jivelite for the controller. There's a howto thread on these forums about creating the service.
