Is there any way of viewing what the Pi is doing during the start up time in the terminal window. At the moment I see nothing until "starting server on port 10002"

Yes, but try the other suggestions. Also post the command you use to mount your usb drive, or the extract from /etc/fstab if it's in it. I'll compare with what I do.

    From fstab

    UUID=54D8D96AD8D94ABE /media/usb0 ntfs defaults,nofail

I am not quite sure why this is relevant. The USB drive works perfectly with LMS and SAMBA and the slow start up occurs at any time not only after a reboot.

    Hi,
Well, computers are not "exact science", some things can have an impact even if there is no apparent relationship. I know there are ways to better mount disks in linux, but I'm not an expert on ntfs on linux, I use only linux formatted drives. So, I can't give an advice right now.
What you can do then, is stop LMS, copy some files to the SD card, unplug your drive, start MusicIp and see if it changes anything.

I don't think MusicIP reads the USB drive when it starts, it reads the default.m3lib file on the sd card. Is there a log file which would tell me what was happening during the service start up?

There is a file in home sub directory .MusicMagic/log.txt.
I'm not sure that you'll have what's happening at startup.

    Some updates to first post

First post updated with some bugfixes and addons to the tutorial reflecting the recent discussions

Added instructions for Music IP Recipes
Added instructions for Music IP Filters

Instructions for MusicIP Moods added to first post, update of LMS source possible?

Instructions for creating MusicIP moods added in the first post.

This requires updating MusicIP plugin files after each installation / update of LMS. Maybe Michael Herger could update the files in the LMS source master, in case he does not see any other side effects (I did this half a year ago and couldn't find any side effects of prolonging the timeouts):

See first post for instructions, how to create moods. The above mentioned one time edits are:
Edit the files files Common.pm, Plugin.pm, and Importer.pm in your MusicIP plugin folder, in my case /usr/share/perl5/Slim/Plugin/MusicMagic
and set all timeouts to 120 (best is to search for "timeout" in these files)

Spent the last month analysing all my live tracks and now LMS no longer tries to import 29000 tracks during MusicIP import. It still imports around 1400 tracks and I have no idea why since I only had 122 unanalysable tracks in the Windows GUI. The number of tracks in the headless version also does not match the Windows GUI version and again I don't know why. The Pi is no longer crashing due to lack of memory but I still have a swap size of 500MB which is fully used during a scan.

Spicefly seems to pick songs random

I know this is a bit off-topic in this thread, but I wasn't sure where to post this question.
I've been using spicefly for a few weeks and have specific rules on what songs to play based on MusicIp filter. However, it seems to just pick random songs. When I look at the SugarCube Live View, it shows an empty MusicIp Track Recommendations:

    Name: 2017-10-09_11-15-06.jpg
Views: 50
Size: 110.6 KB

So, based on this, it looks like MusicIP isn't making any recommendations, which verifies that spicefly is just picking songs randomly. Any help/advise would really be appreciated. Thanks!
