    Or is it...

I used the This American Life playlist maker to make playlists, listened
to an episode last night, and went to bed. This morning, the SliMP3 and
Squeezebox both showed the episode title and were stopped. I grabbed the
Squeezebox remote and hit left arrow, up arrow, browse music folder and
    the UI hung.

So I went to the browser interface (fishbone) and it showed that the
stream was still playing, with the progress bar sitting at about 50% and
being very jumpy. The left pane music list wouldn't load, just the
player controls and the playlist. (I've seen this sort of thing in
Fishbone before, particularly when a web browser is left open on it
while the music is changed from the remote, though no browser was left
    open this time).

Hitting stop in the web UI caused the Squeezebox display to immediately
return to normal and the music folder pane to display. Needless to say,
nothing was logged. Seems to me that Mplayer and AlienBBC are not being
clear with each other about when the stream is done playing. I wasn't
listening closely, so I'm not 100% certain that the Real Audio stream
finished properly instead of dying at about the expected time.

    Hi Jack.

If you can make this happen again, could you do a little diagnostics for
me? Basically... while it looks like the stream is still running - can
you do a 'ps -Af | grep mplayer' and 'ps -Af | grep lame'? That will
tell us whether mplayer and/or lame have indeed exited. Finally - what
is the address of the stream you were running?

I take it you are running AlienBBC v0.11 or so? Older versions had
    trouble with streams exiting.

    48khz wavs play at 44.1

I've made some some 48khz wavs from dvd soundtracks. When stored as
flac they play at 44khz and a trawl of the mailing list found that this
is a known problem. Any news?

However when I play the raw 48khz wav files they too are being streamed
at 44.1 khz. ie too slow. Its the same on the digital and analogue
outputs. The bitrate listed by the server is 1536kbps CBR so I don't
    understand whats going on.

    any ideas?
