    Directory Structure

Is there a best way to setup a directory structure for the LMS?

Right now for the top level, I have:
    - Albums / <Album> / <# - Song Title>
    - Albums - Xmas / <Album> / <# - Song Title>
    - Artists (individual tracks) / <Artist> / <Artist - Song Title>
    - Christmas (individual tracks) / <Artist - Song Title>
    - Humor / <Artist - Song Title>
    - Movies (individual tracks) / <Artist - Song Title>

    Not very consistent.

I had a lot of CDs digitized and they are in this format:
    <Artists> / <Album> / <# Song Title>

What is the best way to setup the new directory structure?

I want to be able to pick by Genre, Artists or Album.

    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,

folder struktures are only relevant for
    • artwork files
    • bmf

other than that you need a library with good tags cause lms is databased and uses your tags.

I am using a structure like:

    0-9\2Raumwohnung\Album_X
    0-9\2Raumwohnung\Album_Y

    0-9\4hero
    A\Abba
    Z\ZZ-Top

    Sampler\album_X
    Sampler\album_Y
    Soundtracks\album_X
    Soundtracks\album_Y
    Childstuff\album_X
    Audiobooks\album_X

That works for me - but iam not in the mode to say "thats best"

Consistent tagging works best . Have correctly spelled artist names and correct case and use album artist and artists Fields

The only case I've found where directory structure comes into play is on multi-disc sets. If you want all discs in the set to show as a single album they need to be in the same folder. I've tried having them in different folders like
    /album /disc #/songs
and no matter how I tagged the album it would show as a separate album for each disc until I put it all in a single folder (this is on Windows).

odd. I have lots of multidisc sets. In LMS settings I have the option set to show multidisk sets as a single album. And I have them in one parent folder, but with subfolders (disk 1, disk 2, disk 3, etc.). They all show in LMS as a single album (assuming I have the ALBUM tag info filled with exactly same album title for all the disks, with the only differentation being the DISK tag being set to 1, 2, 3, etc.). This is true for both my windows and linux LMS installs.

In the land of LMS tagging is the key factor not the folder structure although I subscribe to the artist / album / track format myself. I do put multi disc sets into one folder and ensure that mp3tag has the disc number correctly set.

    Tip.
Decide very early on whether you want your Artists sorted by First name or Last name. Example

    Eric Clapton
    or
    Clapton, Eric

If you get Clapton, Eric and you thought you had tagged everything as Eric Clapton then look at "ArtistSort" tag.

All of the above is unless of course you insist on using "Browse Music Folder" in which case you can make up your own rules.

..artist/album/track but thats basic if you have amgigantic collection a/ b/ c/ migth be something .

What not to do ,don't show thousands f files in single directory witty bad or no tagging.
