LMS won't start after update to Ubuntu 16.04

I've just updated my server to Ubuntu 16.04 and discovered that LMS won't start. I've installed the latest deb package, logitechmediaserver_7.9.0~1461319207_all.deb but I just get a log entry every 5 seconds saying "Logitech Media Server died. Restarting.". It worked perfectly well prior to the Ubuntu update, but I'm not sure which bit is broken. Can anyone point me in the right direction? My perl version claims to be "This is perl 5, version 22, subversion 1 (v5.22.1) built for i686-linux-gnu-thread-multi-64int", but I don't know what it was beforehand, or whether that's even relevant.

    Thanks in advance

Unfortunately we don't have support for Ubuntu's 32-bit version in LMS.
Is there any chance you could upgrade to the 64-bit version?

I can't upgrade - I don't believe that hardware's capable. It used to work - was that just good luck?

No, older versions of Ubuntu came with older Perl versions - which we
supported. Is 16.04 a LTS release? I might need to look into adding
        support for 32-bit, too...

Which also makes me wonder whether the other LMS branches should get some form of update if possible, because Ubuntu 16.04 LTS currently only works with the 7.9 branch.

Maybe this is a good moment to replace the 7.8 branch entirely by a "community supported" 7.9-based stable release branch next to the nightly builds?

I'm sorry to say no, I won't go there. Building all those binaries is
too much of a hassle, and I am to do it.

7.9 is as stable as 7.7. And you wouldn't get any support for the
"officially supported" 7.7 either. So just go with 7.9 and be happy.
Once you have it set up, turn off automatic updates and update
notifications if you don't want to run into unexpected problems.

Understandable, especially for 7.7. But what about the 7.8 branch? Currently I don't see a future for that branch. On most platforms -within one or two years- it simply won't work anymore is my expectation (same for 7.7 btw).

Once upon a time I build several Linux binaries&packages myself, I know it can be a hassle.... Is there a reason why this is something you must do solely? I mean, there still is a community around over here...

I've just downloaded the _all.deb package from your link and installed it, and all appears to work perfectly. At least, the server runs and shows my music. I'm in a different building so I can't tell if sound is actually coming out of the radios, but I assume they're OK.

                      Thank you very much :-)

Just crank it up to the max playing some really bad music. They will
                        tell you :-).

7.8 is for the community releases what 7.7 is officially: maintenance
                          mode, bug fixes only.

                          7.9+ is the future.

Definitely. You could easily buil those binaries for 7.8 yourself :-)

Thank you Michael. 7.9 worked with my Ubuntu 16.04 on an Intel NUC. I had installed 7.7 because that was on the LMS webpage, and it did not run.

                              Thanks a lot Michael!

Does your answer apply to Fedora too?

I wondered why the latest version (2.4) of Vortexbox, based on Fedora core 23, was exclusively built for the 64 bits version... and your answer above can be the explanation.

I guess your recent addition of support for 32 bits versions might allow to build a 32 bits version of the latest version of Vortexbox too that some missed

Am I correct in my guess?

                              L.
