    Lots of third party plugins, no iTunes however. Maybe some of Erland's plugins?

    What do server.log and/or scanner.log say?

    Scanner gets very near the end of, but doesn't complete the "Discovering files/directories" phase of the scan, timer just carries on, in Task manager, cpu for scanner is ~60%, need to kill the process.

    Nothing in the server log, very little in the scanner log

    Code:
    [14-05-12 19:09:50.0751] main::main (202) Starting Logitech Media Server scanner (v7.9.0, 1399649268, Sat May 10 03:05:32 CUT 2014) perl 5.014001

    I just upgraded to 7.9 from 7.8.1 today (Windows 7). My first attempt at a rescan (just to test -- hadn't added any new music) resulted in exactly this problem with the same log entries. I let it run for awhile before killing the server and scanner processes. After restarting, I did a complete clear and rescan -- it worked fine. I then tried another "new and changed" rescan, and it completed without incident this time. Gremlins, I suppose.

    EDIT: I was mistaken -- it was a Playlists-only scan that completed properly. I am now running a new/changed scan and it has hung again. Same log entries as yours. It hung on a different file in the "Discovering files/directories" step this time, FWIW.

    7.9 Problems/Bugs

    Do you guys seeing this neverending scanning have something in common? Operating system? Using symlinks or playlists? Multiple music folders? CUE sheets? Could you please enable debugging for the scanner to see whether it starts looping somewhere?

    For me:

    Win 7
    All files are mp3 format
    A few small playlists
    No cue sheets
    No symlinks
    Single music folder

    I can't help with logging at the moment, as I have reverted to 7.8.1 for now (I add music fairly regularly and do a new & changed rescan nightly)

    Set all items pertaining to scanner to debug, ran a new and changed scan - nothing other than previous in the scanner log.
    Only three lines added to the server log after I'd killed the process with Task Manager

    Code:
    [14-05-12 21:02:44.8571] Slim::Schema::wipeCaches (2061) Wiped all in-memory caches.
    [14-05-12 21:02:44.8644] Slim::Schema::wipeCaches (2061) Wiped all in-memory caches.
    [14-05-12 21:02:44.9064] Slim::Music::Import::nextScanTask (702) remaining scans in queue:()

    I was mistaken about server.log errors.

    Here's a server.log from starting 7.8.1 with an empty cache:

    Code:
    [14-05-12 19:41:18.6103] main::init (368) Starting Logitech Media Server (v7.8.1, TRUNK, UNKNOWN) perl 5.014001
    [14-05-12 19:41:19.8602] Slim::Utils::SQLiteHelper::postConnect (359) Optimizing DB because of missing or empty sqlite_stat1 table
    [14-05-12 19:41:19.8723] Slim::Schema::init (162) Warning: Creating new database - empty, outdated or invalid database found
    [14-05-12 19:41:20.5223] main::checkDataSource (1089) Warning: Schema updated or no media found in the database, initiating scan.
    And here's a server log from starting 7.9 with an empty cache:

    Code:
    [14-05-12 19:43:55.2353] main::init (368) Starting Logitech Media Server (v7.9.0, TRUNK, UNKNOWN) perl 5.014001
    [14-05-12 19:43:56.5165] Slim::Utils::SQLiteHelper::postConnect (370) Optimizing DB because of missing or empty sqlite_stat1 table
    [14-05-12 19:43:56.5230] Slim::Schema::forceCommit (2109) Warning: Trying to commit transactions before DB is initialized!
    [14-05-12 19:43:56.5331] Slim::Schema::init (162) Warning: Creating new database - empty, outdated or invalid database found
    [14-05-12 19:43:57.0790] main::checkDataSource (1092) Warning: Schema updated or no media found in the database, initiating scan.
    [14-05-12 19:44:32.4311] Slim::Utils::SQLiteHelper::postConnect (370) Optimizing DB because of missing or empty sqlite_stat1 table
    [14-05-12 19:44:32.4380] Slim::Schema::forceCommit (2109) Warning: Trying to commit transactions before DB is initialized!
    Looking at the timestamps of the last two messages, 35 seconds later, these have to be happening after the scanner has failed.
