This is another update on my adventures with the Wandboard and the Community Squeeze. I have a first project (still ongoing) that is documented here: http://www.communitysqueeze.org/imag...p#Pascal_Hibon

Due to the fact that the Community Squeeze is working great I got some ideas for two other projects for this player in my house. Both of these projects require a Squeezebox that will be mounted behind the sealing driving in-ceiling speakers through an amplifier which also resides behind the ceiling. The Community Squeezebox needs to switch the amplifier on and off based on the power state of the player. So there was a need for a bit of additional electronics and a custom Lua script. The Lua script is driving GPIO_19 on the Wandboard. GPIO_19 simply drives an SSR (Solid State Relays) which powers the amplifier on and off. Below are some pictures of the project:

I use a 3.5 mm stereo jack for the trigger output. The two resistors and the transistor are soldered around the jack connector:

This is how it connects to the Wandboard:

And here it is all assembled:

For those of you who are interested the schematic is attached. And I’ll post the Lua script and some documentation to install it in a later post. Maybe JackOfAll can put it all up on the Community Squeeze website.

My original SLIMP3 doesn't have wireless (which would be nice). It also only plays MP3 files natively.

One of the things that would be nice is if it has a slightly larger buffer. If I use it to play over a VPN (where the server is at home and I take the unit to the office), sometimes I get drop-out in the audio that results in pops and other noises. Would the Squeezebox have a larger buffer that minimize this?

Also, are there audio differences between the units? Would one of them have better sound quality (theoretically even) because of different processing chip or output section?

Is there a cross-reference showing the difference in features between all the units maybe?

Any input would be welcome.

TIA,

Hello,

I would like to tell the forum community my bad experience as a French customer with a German dealer. Sorry for my bad English.

I bought a Touch to the German company Deltatecc on January 2012. The screen touch feature stopped working few weeks ago. I could use the Touch with the remote control only. I tried to downgraded the firmware, I pushed many time the reset button - either short or long pushes, all with no success.

As my Touch was still under guarantee for 8 months I explained the problem to Deltatecc on April 20 . They asked me to send them the Touch to "check it in their service". They acknowledge the receipt of the parcel on April 30. They got my Squeezebox, the full set of accessories, a copy of the invoice, a short description of the problem.

I got a mail from Deltatecc on May 2.
1 - The device cannot be fixed nor replaced as it is no longer manufactured.
2 - As per Google Translate : they " would like to offer a gesture of goodwill following alternative: the new Logitech UE Smart Radio in black".

I replied to them the same day, as soon I could read their e-mail and have it translated : "Thank you for your proposal to send me a Smart Radio in compensation of the damage. I accept your offer ON CONDITION that you also send me back my faulty Squeezebox Touch". The capital letters were in my original message too.

I got another mail from Deltatecc seven minutes later (Google Translate - German to English) : "We arrange the shipping the Logitech UE Smart Radio in Black immediately. The defective Logitech Squeezebox Touch Internet radio was passed on to the manufacturer and can not be given" (back).

I sent immediately to Deltatecc à new e-mail. I said to them : I want my Squeezebox back, it is still my property even if it was not working well, the capabilities of a Smart Radio capabilities has nothing to do with a Squeezebox, all that mess is unacceptable.

The next day, Deltatecc sent to me the following (Google Translate) : " Repair your order has been processed according to the manufacturer today and sent by us to you.".

I got the parcel on May 10. Unfortunately my Touch was not in it. Deltatecc have only shipped to me a Logitech Smart Radio, a simple internet radio set, just 100% useless for me.

I have contacted Logitech to get some help from them. They said they will help me to locate my Squeezebox in their workshops only if I can tell them where and when it has been sent by Deltatecc. The person mentioned that Deltatecc has probably not shipped the device to Logitech ...

Since May 10, I have sent to Deltatecc several e-mails and a 4 pages letter. To sum up my messages, I said to them :
1 - The Smart Radio is not a substitute for the Squeezebox. I can send it back to you. Just ask for it.
2 - I never gave you permission to swap my Squeezebox Touch for a Smart Radio. Why have confiscated my Squeezebox ? I'm still the owner of the device I sent you for repair purpose only.
3 - Where is my Squeezebox Touch now ? I want to know how and when Deltatecc - or Logitech - are going to send it back to me.
4 - Why don't you answer to my mails and letter ?

I never had any reply from Deltatecc. They keep silent. Deltatecc trapped me.
Is my Touch in someone's pocket or on Ebay ?

Thank you for any suggestion to help me have my Touch back.

Squeezebox replacement with Andoid Mini PC + DAC, e.g. A10, RK3066

it seems there already are quite a few projects on the way to help compensate for the lack of squeezebox compatible hardware since logitech decided to cancel the product line, but either the replacement hardware is scarce and hard to come by (pogoplug) or the price seems to be quite on the high side (wandboard). This makes me wonder if there is a way to make cheaper systems for people how care more about multiroom sync than high end audio. Maybe based on android arm platforms like the Allwinner A10 or Rockchip RK3066 in combination with external dacs (e.g. chinese muse pcm2704 based), which seem to be much cheaper.

So far I have two squeezelite clients on x86 hardware which are connected to the network via ethernet and which will play synced music for hours without experiencing any skip ahead events. When I add the raspberry pi connected via lan, skip ahead events on the pi occur every 10-15 seconds amounting to 10-15 msec while the two others stay in sync. Unfortunately this is not the case when adding another client (raspberry pi, A10 Tablet, Motorola Defy) via wifi, which I ascribe to wifi latency issues (caused by ~20 wifis around here). But also if i increase the minimum sync difference, the wifi clients will slowly run out of sync (faster in case of the raspberry, which i think might be caused by the usb issues).

Now my question would be: given an ideal wired network and using an android mini pc equipped with an external usb dac, who is in charge of the timing? will this be determined by the pc or the dac? So does it matter if I buy a RK3066 based device like the MK808 or an MK802 which is A10 based? Will it depend on the specific clock the company puts on the pcb? or is it all contriolled by the usb dac?

Hello all,

I’m new to all this and the first port of call was FAQs which drew a blank, then the “new member and some tips please” discussion started by mônman. The thing that impressed me most was that mônman seemed to understand what he was being told; “macro variables”, “crossfade”, "smart gain", “bitrates”. I’d understood this digital audio thing can be complicated, I didn’t realise I had to learn Welsh, though it might be easier!

Seriously though, how do you guys learn about all this? I read real lot of review sites and forums trying to understand enough to decide on my kit and here I am, hopefully sounding like I know what I’m talking about – looking for help (please).

All I needed was something to rip my CD/cassette music collection, store it and play it at a decent quality, with a decent UI, ideally all in one box. The product reviews of the Cocktail, Olive Media or the Brennan units sound between good and wonderful - until you read the customer comments, then you want to slit your throat. I settled on FLAC by a VortexBox and a Squeezebox Touch into my ‘Hi-Fi’ with RCA phono plugs.

I had Hi-Fi separates, Celestion Ditton 15s and Shure cartridges but that was back then. I tell you that to show I’ve got some respect for what the audio is supposed to be but when buying CDs, did I check the audio specifications? No! And all I wanted with the VB and SB was quality access to my music and the info. on the CD cover such as album name, cover art, tracks and notes – and the same ability to organise them. Accepting that VortexBox tagging might not always be correct, I presumed a means of correcting them would be available.

Somehow the SBs (Touch and Radio) can access the VB and play the 24 CD’s worth of music ripped so far. They can’t see the cover art that I know is there (though only 50% correct/available) but do show half a double-CD incorrectly labelled ‘Various Artists’. Obviously a VB listing error but how to amend/correct it? I’ve seen instructions but they don’t say precisely which and where the incorrect files are – I have a PC so is this what “mp3tag, the best tag editor” does - edits the file names, is that what you have to do? I’ve also seen your recommendations for dBpoweramp's metadata/tagging facilities but, “tinker with the paths/macro variables”? Like I said, I just want to find and play some music – I’ve heard of something called Bliss too, that might help but I’ve got a feeling it’s a different sort of bliss.

The only thing working as it should is music, both RIP and PLAY but every answer about anything else seems to generate two new questions, and the result is this embarrassingly long posting. I’ll try to conclude with some straightforward questions.

- Leave the Squeezebox Touch / ‘Hi-Fi’ connection as is with RCA phono plug leads?
- Find/buy something that will allow me put the music in alphabetical order by Album and by artist, where tracks weren’t associated with an album. E.g. pre-album singles or random compilations like ‘Hits of the 60s’ - mp3tag? Or can the SB Search facility show all artists’ music grouped by name?
- Buy dBpoweramp and Bliss?
- Where can I find and what is Samba? Should I be looking for this?

Logitech Media Server - Control Panel
I start this from a Desktop icon instead of automatically. Does this have to be kept started or stopped, and does this affect anything else?

I suppose I’ve synced to my MySqueezebox.Com account as I’ve entered my details as instructed but I can’t tell.
I’m supposed to configure LMS to find my media through the Library tab. How? (I have Googled all this!)
a. The ‘Media Library Name’ is ‘Nil Yet’. I didn’t create that. Do I call it something else?
The Control Panel doesn’t seem to ‘see’ the VB, so rescans come up at zero. Even though the VB is obviously on the network, re-mapping didn’t show it up.

b. Still in the Library tab, my Windows Music, Videos and Picture folders are listed already. I see ‘Playlist’ but I haven’t set any of these up; there’s nothing else unless I Browse to ‘Network’ where the VB name is listed, is that it, or one of its sub-lists? Or all of them? Do I select and click to Add? (I have Googled all this too!).

Logitech Media Server
In the top right hand corner the Player selection button offers Player 1, Player 2, and the two SBs, plus Syncronize. This is a bit obvious even for me but ‘Syncronize’ what? And what decides which synchronised component dominates if any settings differ?

If I go to Settings (which I’m aware I can’t expect to understand yet) I see that somehow LMS knows I have ripped 24 albums even though the rescans on the Control Panel come up at zero, so something is working.

On the Information tab I can see that the SB Touch has a Wireless Signal Strength of around 45%. It seems to play OK (but what do I know?), would the % affect the fidelity? I ask because I’ve seen the advice posted by Garym and Julf about digital-analog-digital and other mysteries, which begs the question – am I doing this all wrong?

Do the settings in LMS apply even when it’s not on? (I.e. accessing the VB by the SB Touch directly).

I’m reluctant to make random ‘try and see’ changes anywhere in case what is working stops. So far we are using the SBs to access the music so I’m guessing LMS isn’t essential.

On my Windows 7 laptop, browsing to ‘Network’ is supposed to show the VB and SBs on the map but it doesn’t and re-mapping didn’t work either. However, if I enter the VB name in Search, it finds everything in ‘Network’. As far as I know, other than ‘Rescans’ in the LMS Control Panel, everything works, so should I just ignore this?

Now I’ve found out how to do it, I hope to place a similar post (not the same) on the VortexBox forum.

Thank you for any help and information, very much appreciated and welcomed.

I primarily listen to dynamic playlists and music generated by MusicIP, either initial mixes or Sugarcube seeded from a single song.

Lately, I've been looking for more of a mood music option (e.g. mellow, lively, etc.). I can do only so much with Dynamic Playlists (as far as I know) since the genre/year (my usual criteria) isn't enough of a qualifier in this instance.

My idea was to use the playlist manager plugin to create playlists which and add tracks which I liked and fit into these categories "using the add to playlist... feature. Over time the list should be big enough that I could play these playlists in shuffled order and these would give me my moods.

Has anyone else done anything similar or have a better way to do this?

Also can playlists be saved as shuffle even if the regular system doesn't use this option? I rarely use conventional playlists or listen to albums, so in theory I could set this on the player/lms, but I'm unclear if this would mess up any of my existing functionality.

TIA

Hi!

Just yesterday when i was browsing for Squeezebox I noticed it was gone from almost all stores on the web. Then I found out (a little late) that Logitech had discontinued the series...
So I just wonder, what will this mean in the long-term? I have a Squeezebox Boom (and I love it - the best player ever!), will it eventually stop working with Squeezebox Server (again I now understand it is Logitech Media Server, what's the difference?)? I mostly listen to Spotify via the 3rd party plugin and radio stations. Is these services dependent on Logitechs mysqueezebox.com service at all? Actually I couldn't remember ever logging in to mysqueezebox.com... (although I created an account when I bought the Boom in early 2011).

Also I've been thinking of buying a Squeezebox Radio for quite a long time, my girlfriend also want a radio in the kitchen. Maybe this is the last chance now... Or is the UE Radio downgradeable to use Squeezebox Server?

Hope someone can help :)
Thanks in advance!

It is so much easier to manage - I have Time Machine running on all Macs to a share on the ReadyNAS, and wireless backups running from the iOS devices to each MAC

I'm a complete Linux novice and am struggling to find a step by step guide as to installing headless MusicIP on the ReadyNAS. Is there one?i do mean complete novice - I'll need my hand holding through each step.
