View Full Version : USB drive vs Server (Vortex) - will this improve buffering and other problems?

Hi. I've been using a SQ touch for 4 years now, generally quite happy, although since six months I've had a lot of buffering issues (I think it's buffering).

I've searched the forums over and over but haven't found the answer to this question, happy to read old threads but couldn't find the right one.

Just trying to understand what will and won't change, as it's clear to me that the way these gadgets interact is not always intuitive to a newbie.

So:

I bought the SQT in order to be able to use an external USB drive rather than an NAS server, to save space and money (I live in London, space and money in short supply!).

I had app. 5,000 songs on the USB drive, most encoded in FLAC, some in mp3 or wav, probably taking up 150 GB of space on the 1 TB drive. The Touch is wired via ethernet to my router.

Generally the Touch has performed pretty well, although it sometimes shows the following error (Problem: Can't find file for:) and skips to a next track.

When recently, my girlfriend moved in, we added 1,500 tracks, and since then I've had intermittency issues:

- it sometimes starts to buffer quite a bit.
- It also gives that same error message.
- It also tends to get out of synch with Ipeng, much more than before.

I spoke with someone from support who suggested the Touch doesn't have enough internal memory and I get an NAS server. It looks to me from some research that the Vortex is a good choice.

But what I don't understand is, what workload exactly will the VB be taking from the Touch? What would it do to improve the buffering? If there is a buffering problem, if the Touch is lacking where is it occurring and why? How will it change?

Just trying to understand what will and won't change, as it's clear to me that the way these gadgets interact is not always intuitive to a newbie.

many thanks

Alex
