OT: covert from Flac to MP3 automatically (and save tags)

I suspect I need a command line to be able to batch convert a bunch of my
FLACs to wav then MP3 and maintain their tags.

Any tips?

You might want to check out foobar2000 for this purpose. It works
great, is very flexible, and avoids the intermediate WAV file.
