View Full Version : Station blocked by broadcaster

As of this morning, when I try to tune in WXRT in Chicago on my SB Radio, I get an audible message stating "This station is currently unavailable" and text on the display that says "Station blocked by broadcaster." At the same time, I can listen to WXRT through their website, and access it as well through Tunein.com. I'm not experiencing this problem with any other Chicago local radio stations. The URL for the stream doesn't appear to work in SB Server or mySB either. I've never seen this before. Any ideas as to what is going on?

I'm getting the same thing from 105.3 The Fan and 1080 KRLD (sister stations) in Dallas. It was working earlier and just cut out, but same message.

I just had the same problem this morning with WBZ 1030AM in Boston. I noticed that this station is no longer available as a radio station selection in the menu, it's gone! But, I am able to listen to the audio stream on my PC from the CBS website. They are using radio.com as the host site. If I enter the "radio.com" url into my squeezebox favorites menu, an error message says the format can not be read. I wonder if it might be something to do with CBS stations that are blocking their content to Logitech?

I've incurred the same issue in Chicago with WSCR 670 and WBBM 780. They are both CBS stations so I suspect it is related to CBS. Anyone aware of a way around this or does Logitech have an answer?

I guess I'll be listening to something else now. The reason I bought a Squeezebox is because my computer has other audio coming out at times, and I want to be able to listen to audio files stored on my computer or listen to the radio without having a conflict. The Squeezebox solved all that as well as bad reception from regular broadcast. CBS just lost my "business" by making themselves unavailable.

I agree, the same with me, I'll just have to listen to a different station. I have 3 of these devices and live in a high rise so I needed a device that didn't get AM interference.

I have the same problem. Says its being blocked by tunein. Yet if i go straight to tunein it plays.
There has to be a reason and a way to correct this. Can't just let it go.

EDIT: Just found out that CBS owns the stations I was trying to get and they wanted it removed from tunein.com.

This really sucks.

Yeah, it is probably greedy CBS trying to drive listeners to the web site, or having some sort of money issue with TuneIn. I hit WXRT up on Facebook and Twitter. Of course there has been no answer. The wife is NOT going to like this... :( I hope Logitech will chime in. I think I'll post the same problem on the official Logitech forum.

Indeed this is a CBS issue. They are restricting all streaming feeds to TuneIn. They want you to use radio.com or yahoo apps that are found on Android and iOS mobile devices. This leaves SB users out in the cold. This really really bad. Five of my presets this morning are gone. Only thing left to do is complain to CBS, but since they are trying to direct all users to their proprietary apps to get more advertising dollars this is not likely to change much.

I tried using the radio.com app this morning and it just crashes. Really great CBS.

Same here with the wife issue. I just bought the radio so my wife can listen to the am station in the morning since we are in the country and it doesn't come in well. Now she is back to the standard radio. Please logitech, give us some other option to access these stations!!!

toyranch

Their website is a joke. When I google the local station, the google result still shows "Jagger and Henson", who have been gone since mid-April.

One of the reasons I bought a sqeezebox was to get the radio OFF my computer speakers. Preaching to the choir here, but when surfing the internet, various audio comes on and at different volumes. Putting it on a different device is the only reasonable solution.

They may have found a way to corral more ad dollars, but at the expense of listeners (zero sum gain there). There are a thousand stations on my squeezebox. It's not real hard to listen to a different one, compared to jumping through hoops for CBS.

It may not do any good, but at the same time it might. You can complain here:

I just dropped a note to CBS and WXRT. I would imagine other Internet radios are having the same issue. Pretty short sighted move.

..... Please logitech, give us some other option to access these stations!!!

The problem is CBS, not Logitech. Find where else those stations are offered (if any) and maybe Logitech can add that access portal.
Some places to look:
LiquidCompass.net
IheartRadio.com
Reciva.com
vTuner.com

But I suspect CBS is yanking all such access to all non-CBS portals. Just a guess.

KROQ in LA has been blocked today as well.

Gotta love CBS... er, not.

I did vote on that topic on their Streaming Audio contact page requesting that they restore the stations. It would be great if everyone else did as well so they'll at least be aware that this isn't a popular move.

I bought a Phoenix Com1 Wifi radio a few years ago. It is now an expensive brick; CBS disabled reception of their stations on it.

I spent quite a few dollars for my SB, and as of today, I own another brick.

I'll try the CBS links that another user posted, but don't expect much.

I sincerely hope Logitech resolves this issue.

I sincerely hope Logitech resolves this issue.

There's nothing Logitech can do. They don't have any contract which would allow them to force CBS to re-enable access for Squeezebox users specifically.

It's either an issue between TuneIn and CBS, or it's a unilateral CBS decision. Either way it's CBS who are at fault here.

This is a classic internet radio issue - so many US stations use proprietary software seeminly to force listeners into using a web-based browser to listen - the purpose is to push advverts at you while you listen. In my view radio is radio not TV. Avoid such broadcasters - there's plenty of alternative choice out there!

vrette
2011-08-15, 16:31
I don't get the rationale of pushing ads to radio listeners. I can listen to OTA radio all day long and not see any ads. I hear the ads on the stations just like everyone else. On the other hand, alienating hundreds of thousands (maybe more?) listeners with internet radio hardware is a bonehead move. I'm not going to download their crappy iOS app just so I can listen on my iPhone. I'll either turn the analog radio on, or move on to another station. Stupid Greedy Chuckleheads...

castalla
2011-08-15, 16:46
I guess they have 'research' which shows that visual ads are more effective than 'audio' ads - they can stream audo and just catch your eye with a visual. I personally psychologically fade out audio ads - much more difficult to do with visuals. On the other hand, I just tend to avoid any stations which push advertising at me - that's my choice!

Just got this off the Logitech forum. I gave it a try and it works. No art, but I can live without it for radio.

Was emailed this from FROM CBS INTERACTIVE MUSIC GROUP -

Due to licensing issues, the station you were listening to on TuneIn is no longer available.

On desktop to continue listening to your favorite CBS stations, go to Radio.com.
For mobile users, you can download the official Radio.com application from the iTunes store or your Android Market place.

For internet radio device listeners, you can access stations directly as follows:

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KROQFMAAC.pls OR

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KROQFM.pls

Please replace the station call sign with the appropriate call sign.
After tuning in, you can ‘bookmark’ or set the station as a preset for future reference.

Why bother? Switch to a non-greedy broadcaster! In a globalised world, this licencing excuse is pathetic.

Apple have reserves greater than the US government - gazillions - yet they are engaging in a pathetic lawsuit to prevent Samsung introducing a tablet computer. They already have billions of sheep who are unlikely to switch to an identikit model.

How much more do they actually want ... I suspect they want everything and will use any trick in the book to achieve it! Banksters, media purveyors, they are all the same greedy army devouring averything they can at whatever the cost.

I went to http://www.radio-locator.com/
Found my blocked stations. Click to open the playlist in VLC.
Then copied the link to mysqueezebox.com favorites.
Now I can connect my radio to mysqueezebox site and access these stations.

ejnj: It's a playlist file you need something like vlc or winamp to open these. They will not open within a browser if that is what you are trying to do.

Businesses have lots of rules and laws they need to comply with. For broadcasters, licensing rules are foremost among the many. Ignoring them would be asinine and ultimately unnecessarily expensive.

If you find a company that you think is more focused or successful in conducting its business than its peers, there's a solution: be a capitalist and buy that stock!

Understood, but I think the point is they are using licensing as an excuse for what is really much more about generating more ad revenue by pushing listeners to CBS Radio Android and iOS apps, along with their web sites that are chock full of advertising.

Got it, I missed the nuance, it was a BS comment. Easy enough to understand why they push listeners to portals that give them more revenue opportunities. It's a business, not a public service.

I cannot believe CBS could be this stupid. They are pissing off some of their most loyal listeners. Who goes out and buys a $200+ internet radio except the most die hard fans! Idiots. I will definitely be writing to CBS and their sponsors about this and I encourage everyone who reads this to do the same. If we don't tell them we'll make them lose money they'll never listen.

That said, can someone please provide a link that would allow me to listen to 660 WFAN

Thanks to all who posted regarding the sudden loss of CBS streaming on the Squeezebox. I too just lost 5 of my 6 presets. I grew up with WCBS 880 the great sound quality of the Squeezebox and with the battery option the ability to bring it anywhere around the house. (I live in upstate NY now and the Squeezebox sure beats the weak signal on a high quality AM radio). I definitely will complain to CBS. By the way, Tune In on my iPhone has also lost the CBS stations. I'm not sure how CBS benefits from that.

Also CBS owns LastFM and we all know how that went. I always thought Clear Channel was the evil one.

1. TuneIn (aka. RadioTime) was told by Clear Channel to disable their recording app on the iPad so now you can't record any Clear Channel Stations on the iPad. Probably the same thing happened here so there is something flaky about depending another portal instead of having Logitech getting a direct stream. RadioTime is probably collecting data on everyone's listening habits. DAR.fm luckily does not take orders from CBS or Clear Channel.

2. Let's see how long before streamworld cloaks their streams. Here's an email I wrote to Spirit of New York (advertiser) about CBS-FM. Please feel free to use it as a template if you want to notify advertisers in your area:

Dear Ms. ___,
Since I've heard the _____ commercials on ____ in _____, I can assume you must be an advertiser. I thought you would like to know that CBS has blocked all it's internet stream on the Logitech Squeezebox. This means all CBS affiliates across the country will no longer stream on the internet. For the millions of people who are listening to the internet with the convenience of an internet radio, you will no longer be able to reach them.

Aha, another Dan Rea fan! You're welcome.
This site has helped me with several technical problems so I am glad to give back.

It seems that getting the DIALUP into the address does the trick for this AM station.

Did you know this particular CBS affiliate had the highest ad revenue in the Boston, MA market? It was way into the millions. Anyone who listens knows they have an inordinate amount of advertisements. CBS must be promising their advertisers some out of this world results by driving listeners to websites. Although I emailed to complain, the don't think they will change policy unless their bottom line fails to increase as result of this move.

I think some attorney could make a class action law suit against Logitec, they can not deliver the internet radio they promised. The money we spent went to Logitec not CBS, before these problems I never even heard of Tunein. This happened a few weeks ago with a local NJ (101.5) radio station- I contacted them and they could care less. Maybe Logitec wants to refund our purchase price? They should be looking for work arounds, not us.

Where does Logitech promise any specific radio station? The only person to make anything out of such an action would be the lawyers.

Why does everyone these days think litigation is the answer? There are 1000s of stations out there - is everybody going to sue just because one particular outfit changes their streaming data?

Well content is king. Just go ask Logitech Revue users who found that no one wanted to allowed their content to be viewed by Google TV without Google licensing the content. Google seems to not care much about Google TV and Logitech Revues are getting cleared out at $99.
If half of the useful stations in the united states are getting blocked, Logitech will either suffer in sales or have to work out a formal work around. TuneIN probably wasn't willing to pay CBS whatever extortion they wanted. But logitech hasn't promised you that you can stream cbs content have they? Want to know whats worse? TuneIN is built into my BMW idrive. Now half the stations I stream aren't available without using the phone to manually change the station and potentially change apps. (hazard) TuneIN integration was one of the reasons I didn't get Sirius/XM. Major bummer. But I don't think I can sue BMW now.

Classs action is a farse, especially for something incidential like this radio. But I do feel cheated out of what I assumed I would be getting and my guess is everybody else here feels the same way. It is very similar to a cable provider not supplying MSG or Fox. But I am suprised, I didnt know that was the way it worked. I would have thought the advertising was the key to the radio profit just like the over the air.

Which they do all the time (well, MSG at least). And you're leaving out a key difference: you pay a subscription fee to the cable provider, but you don't pay anything to the internet radio station.

All CBS radio stations have been pulled from Tune In, this is necessary for all CBS stations from what I can tell, I listen to Chicago and East Coast cities and it's Nationwide.

I've been e-mailing with CBS radio Programming Director in Chicago and he was trying to advise that I get my old radio and use their HD FM stations, I said no thanks, not going back to the Dark Ages at this point.

My fellow listeners,

As a matter of principle, we should not be using the CBS station work-arounds that have been so generously shared with us by our brethren. Instead, we should go the other way...boycott all CBS stations. Additionally, remove them from all your OTA radios AND internet devices. If they don't want us listening to them in our bedrooms and living rooms, why should we listen in our cars and offices?

I am sure that this is a money issue with CBS. They feel they are not making enough of it. Since the middlemen (Logitech and TuneIn) will not pay them their ransom, the provider will deny his listeners...the ones who patronized his advertisers...the content. Kind of like the kid in the playground who took his ball and went home after the call didn't go his way. Well, take the ball home CBS, there are THOUSANDS of other kids who want to play with us.

Long live the fighters!

McDonalds are an advertiser on a couple of the local CBS stations so I wrote to their advertising department telling them that they'll no longer be able to reach any of their target audience who listens via any internet radio which uses TuneIn as a listings source.

It should only need a few big corporates like these to start getting on CBSes back about loss of market to get the wheels of change in motion.

It's not like they remove the adverts from the internet radio streams after all!

You can still listen to all these stations on your Squeezebox using DAR.fm. Here's how.

Go to http://DAR.fm and create an account. Tell it to record whatever show/station you want. If you click the red record button next to a show it will automatically setup a lifetime pass so all future broadcasts will be recorded.

Go to www.mysqueezebox.com and add the MP3tunes using the SAME credentials you used to create an account on DAR.fm.

On your Squeezebox go to MP3tunes and then look in the Playlist. You'll see each radio show/station listed. Select the one you want to play.

What's great about this setup is that you can rewind/pause/ff anytime. Now if we can just get Logitech to add a 30 sec skip button it would be magical!

You can still listen to all these stations on your Squeezebox using DAR.fm.

Is that available with the free DAR.fm accounts, or do you need to be a paid subscriber? On the new user registration page it shows that to listen via a Squeezebox you need to be a premium (paid) member.

Otherwise it looks like a good idea, particularly as there is a show I like which I always miss on a non-CBS station that I'd be able to record.

Is anyone seeing any radio station artwork while using the streamtheworld CBS streams? I'm not seeing any artwork, and I'm curious if it is an issue with my setup, or the streams.

Which brings me to my next thought. It sure would be great if you could choose your own artwork for radio streams with SBS and mySB.

If you hack favorites.opml and restart the server afterwards you can.

I agree, it would be great if you could choose the artwork file in the favourites editor though.

I assume you mean the default art? The image of the tower when no station art is found?
If yes, I definitely agree. I've always wondered why they use simplistic black & white images for any default art on a full color LCD display.

Yeah, I mean the default art... It would be nice to swap in a color graphic / picture of the radio station's call sign. Half the time the artwork from the radio station is wrong anyway.

This doesn't let you play the Yahoo streams still...unfortunately. Can't seem to ID them...

Wouldn't care, but their Lil Kidz Tunes station is one of the few that isn't religious or just plain horrendous.

I haven't read through this entire thread, but it might give you some clues.

I had a difficult time locating a West Coast station's address. One tip I wanted to share was that if you type the call letters and number into Google Search, Wikipedia comes up for that station and streams are listed on the right. Just take the "pls" address and add to my squeezebox.

WBZ is the call sign for an AM radio station in Boston, Massachusetts owned by CBS Radio, itself owned by the CBS Corporation. Originally based in and broadcast from Springfield, Massachusetts, WBZ was the first commercial radio station in the United States.[1] WBZ moved to Boston in 1931 in a swap with a now-defunct

For some reason I cannot see a "pls" address. WBZ was the station I Googled.

Adding stations to the Squeezebox radio using MySqueezebox.com...

1. Turn on your Squeezebox radio and wait until it is booted up.

2. Go to..."mysqueezebox.com".

3. Click on "LogIn".
Enter your "Email Address".
Enter your "Password".

4. Click on "Remote Control".

5. Click on "Internet Radio".

6. Scroll down to the last box, and enter, (or paste) the radio station URL.

7. Click on "Tune In URL".

If station URL is correct, the station will begin playing on your Squeezebox radio.

URL "work around" for CBS blocked stations...

Use the URL below, but substitute your stations call letters
for the capitalized call letters.

(Be sure to add "AM" or "FM" to station call letters)

Examples...

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WBBMAM.pls

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WBZAM.pls

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KDKAAM.pls

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KMOXAM.pls

Thank you Ralph524!! I also was unhappy about losing WBZ.

I run Squeezebox Server on a personal computer. Your procedure also works through the local server's website.

A local station was blocked about two months ago and after a few attempts to guess the URL I gave up and resorted to Wireshark to find out the station name to append to the URL. This is how I did it, hope it's also useful to others.

1) I'm using Wireshark on OS X 10.6.8 but it should work very similarly across platforms. Wireshark is an open-source, packet capture software, to install Google it and download the right version for your OS. Once installed open it and select your capture interface (Ethernet interfaces seem to work better as some WLAN interfaces don't support promiscuous mode) and begin playing your station in your browser, a few seconds is all you need, after this you can stop the capture in Wireshark using the Capture menu (in OS X you need to change the permits of some devices in order to have Wireshark "see" the LAN interfaces, issue sudo chown {your account name} /dev/bpf* in a Terminal window to achieve this temporarily).

2) Pinging streamtheworld.com returned address 208.80.x.x. After stoping the capture you will see all the captured packets in a table, click on the header called Source to sort them using this field and look for an address that begins with 208.80.x.x. Only a few packets should come from this address as the actual streaming is done by other servers. Within the group of packets from this address look for one that has HTTP/XML in the protocol column.

Double click on this packet, it will open in a new window divided in two, in the first section the actual parts of the packet will be shown (Frame, src/dest address etc.), the last of these parts contains the data that is decoded by Wireshark as eXtensible Markup Language, click on the small arrow on the left to expand this section. Now expand the section named <live_stream_config, then expand <mountingpoints> and finally expand <mount>. The string within this field is the name of the station so just add this string to the URL as in provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/<mountpoint string>.pls and test.

Good luck.

Thank you so much, I could not have completed this task without your guidance. I am hoping you can help me with "Step 2" of this task.
I'm going to post a new question...but here it is for you.

I have 2 Squeezbox radios. I successfully added WBZ to one using your guide. Now how do I do it to the second one?
I think when I bought the second radio (I did not hook it up as I have no idea how to do this stuff), she was unable to get the radio going with my email. She thought the problem was the radio would only accept one email address. So my friend registered the second Squeezebox radio using her email address and password. But I live in Ohio and she lives in Maryland. Do I use her email address and password to follow the above steps...or can I use my own email address...which is what I used to successfully access WBZ?
If so...how? Sure hope you or others can help me with this.

Thanks, I was aware of some of these, but, most helpful! I was particularly interested in Fox News versus Fox News Talk if anyone knows. I get it in my car, but, it's not on the Sirius App line up for some reason while CNN and MSNBC make the cut.
