View Full Version : What is Most Stable Release Ever?

I'm a longtime user -- I have a SB1, an SB2, an SB3, and a Boom. My server is a Windows XP box that is dedicated to just running SBS.

But the last few months the server has been quite unstable. It seems like the last few releases have caused me problems. For example, every few days the CPU on my Windows XP server goes to 100% (the file faad.exe seems to be the culprit). Other problems include a Squeezebox just stopping for no apparent reason in the middle of a track.

I just downgraded from 7.6 to 7.5.5 in the hopes that it will be more stable. I remember years ago I could run my SBS (or SlimServer back then) for months without a problem. Is there an older version that people agree is the most stable ever? I only care about listening to music on my SBS -- I don't need radio or mysqueezebox stuff. I just want a really stable whole-house music solution.

Any suggestions on the most rock-solid configuration?

I have run 7.5.3-r31792 since January wo issues other than what I would attribute to wifi. The only unit I run is Touch. I ran it last yr in standalone and then switched to a network w the router and pc w HD attached on the 2nd floor of a century old frame construction house w the Touch on the 1st floor attached to my audio equipment. I do not run plugins just use the library attached to the HD on the 2nd floor. As it works I have ignored the repeated suggestions to upgrade the software. Reading these forum posts on a regular basis has not shown me any reason to upgrade.

I realize this may not give you what you are looking for, but wanted to share my experience w you and others

I agree with dasmuller. I have just downgraded to 7.5.3 as well. The best release since maybe 7.4.2. (Or was it 7.4.3 beta?). If you can live without the added features of 7.5.4 and 7.5.5 (mainly added online services) is probably the best version "ever".

I notice you only have ipk3 players. So your results may be differnt than mine.

The most rock solid solution is to run Vortexbox.

The most rock solid solution is to run Vortexbox.

Not really, with the latest vortexbox you currently get 7.6.0 which is fairly buggy. It works excellent if you aren't affected by any of the 7.6.0 bugs but it's no better than the buggy 7.6.0 release on a computer if you are affected by one of the critical 7.6.0 bugs. Then it's better with a computer where you easily can upgrade to the less buggy 7.6.1 beta or downgrade to the more stable 7.5.6 nightly build.

But generally I agree, if Logitech would properly test the software before releasing it, a VortexBox would for most people be more stable than SBS on a computer. Basically, the VortexBox concept works excellent as long as the software is tested before it's released, if it isn't tested properly, VortexBox requires Linux knowledge and that's something most users doesn't have.

Since you have no Touch or Radio, I would recommend 7.3.4. It's the only version I ever have used/needed. 7.3.3 was new when I bought the first SqueezeBox, then I installed 7.3.4. I never had to look for another version. Solid since I installed it. First on my XP laptop, then on a W7 box I built just for SqueezeCenter.

I don't have a Touch or Radio (see signature) so no need to use anything else imo.

troll :)

For me it was actually the 7.6 beta in many of its guises my server has run extremely well during 2011 .

(Right now it's in a low point , but that's how it is using betas ) .

But answers are goin to be like this it depends on OS hardware platform and music library etc,. what is rock solid on one system may be a crasher somewhere else

Thanks everyone -- this is very helpful.I'm running 7.5.4 I think on my Win7 box. Despite the fact it only has 1GB of RAM and is also running mail, ftp and TVersity servers it seems fine. I've had issues with the update process earlier this year but once I've sorted the firewall out the server runs 24/7.

If Logitech would properly test the software before releasing it

Do Logitech not properly test the software before releasing it then? Why not?
Seems a bit silly. They have a QA department too don't they? Have they all been fired?

Do they not take Squeezebox seriously?

Limited resources and rushed time schedules decided by Logitech management.

"Department" is probably a strong word, it's currently one person who likely is also responsible to test other products:

It sounds like most of the testing that really means something is currently performed by community members:

Do they not take Squeezebox seriously?

Logitech Developers: Yes, definitely, it's more or less what they live for, it's one of their main passions in life.
Logitech Management: Obviously, not currently, but that might change in the future.

However, there is really no point discussing this further on this forum as the only people seeing it here is people who love Squeezeboxes and does their best to continue making it the best music streaming system in the world, basically it's only seen by community members and the excellent Logitech developers whos passion is the Squeezebox products. Neither Logitech management nor Logitech support staff is reading this forum, so it's pointless to complain on them here.
