View Full Version : iTunes and Linux: where to put the XML data?

I have been happily using SlimServer on Windows, and recently decided to
slip the MP3 data across to a little Linux server I have put together. This
works fine - SlimServer is doing its stuff on the Linux box.

The next step is to use iTunes to manage the music library. I have pointed
iTunes at a Samba volume that is mapped to a Windows drive letter (this is
my first experience of Linux, so it took a bit longer to do than to say!)
and run my music library through the import process. Again, this is peachy -
iTunes is using the mapped drive for music data.

I am left with the iTunes music database as an XML file in the 'My
Music/iTunes' folder in Windows. Now, I do understand that iTunes can't be
persuaded to maintain this file anywhere else, so I'll have to copy it
across to the Linux box, but I don't know where to copy it to. Can anyone
please advise me?

Oh, and I would greatly appreciate help on the best way to keep the XML
files synchronised.

Thank you
Martin Hall

Hi Martin,

What I have done with my setup is to have "my documents" reset in the registry
to a mapped samba driev from the server. This forces itunes to store its
library on the linux server. If you go into server settings, additional,
itunes, you can then choose to have the file located manually. enter the path
where your music is located, and enter the entire path and filename of the xml
file where the entries say. Then you can restart the server go to server
settings and click use itunes. You may even remove the audio dir if you no
longer want the raw informaiton scan to be used.

Also, you can simply export your xml file, make sure to rename it itunes music
library.xml (for some odd reason it likes to default to library.xml for
import). Then save this file to the root of yoru music library path. This
would allow you to keep the itunes setting to find the file automatically, but
you would have to keep the audiodir setting in the server settings.

hope that helps.
