I don't disagree, although perhaps not here!
As a matter of interest, I first heard Ms Arvantitaki on a jukebox in a bar in Crete a couple of years ago. I liked what I heard back then, but had quite forgotten about her until your mention. Amazing how songs bring back memories...
Joe Henry, Reverie
Excellent music :!
He is also pulling your leg , on the intro to some songs in and in some songs you hear dogs in the background recorded just as if they where in the neighbours flat :) I was almost on my way to my neighbour and ask her about the dog...

Louis Armstrong Plays W. C. Handy, Loveless Love at this precise moment.
I was reading Murakami's 1Q84 (recommended for fans of bizarre magic realism) and one of the characters references this recording, and in particular clarinetist Barney Bigard's solo in Atlanta Blues -- had to buy the record.
Well worth it, classic early century blues, recoreded with good sound in 1954. Excellent. But the Barney Bigard solo in that song lasts all of 20 seconds (as the book itself makes clear).

Mississipi John hurt, the man from Avalon :) excellent !
A bit sad that the sound of an 1930 mono recording is less fatiguing than a new loudness war cd :-/

My favorite guitarist bar none. I recall hearing years ago a comment to the effect that the notes that one does not play are just as important as those one does play. There was a whole crew of people in the late 70's early 80's whose main claim to fame was to play loud and fast hitting as many notes as possible-left me cold and still goes on today.
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Works.
Playing on my turntable I must get around to digitising this for the Touch or see if I can find it on CD. On reflection I will stick with the LP's.

Rory Gallagher Irish tour '74. Cradle rock is my new favorite song! What a shame that he didn't rise to the stature of clapton, srv, and hendrix. He certainly had the chops and talent.
His music fits in well with the fact that I'm getting back to playing guitar again. Cradle rock is a blast to play - he was a genius on the guitar.

Murakami often sneaks reference to interesting music into his novels. Starcrossed Lovers from Duke Ellington's Such SWeet Thunder Album in 'South of the Border, West of the Sun; Beethoven's Archduke Trio in 'Kafka on the Shore' and, again from 1Q84, Janacek's Sinfonietta. All good stuff....

Yes, the Janacek plays an important opening part in 1Q84, and is the theme in some ways for the relationship . . . But no, I won't spoil it.

I've been reading about Robin and I've found some of the Hendrix references. From what I've heard of his music so far, his music is much different - the only things in common are their styles are based in the blues and they both played Strats.
RT's playing style is understated, yet there is power to it. Great stuff. His use of the wah pedal on some tracks on of Bridge of Sighs reminded me oa a track on Mad Season with Mike McCready on guitar. Clearly RT is an influence!
I'll check out those 2 albums you mentioned - I'm pretty sure they are available on Rhapsody.

Stumbled across a soundtrack that must be one of the rare ones in my shelves.

I saw Roy twice in Toronto. A great guitarist, a sad and very premature death. Not really underrated, known in the musician community as a magician, just not very successful at building a career. Very sad, I loved him.
Just listened to the Larry Adler and multiple musicians recording of Gershwin - The Glory of Gershwin. He is a harmonica player of renown and this was an 80th birthday project. He is joined by many musical luminaries on vocals, including folks like Sting, Carly Simon, Elvis Costello, etc. George Martin produces. Excellent record.

Have a show w a few trcks from this album that are quite nice. Will need to research more. I particularly like the live shows of this type of music w the chatter between songs. Gives one more of a sense on who the performer is even tho it is performance related. Just gives a comfortable feel to the music like one gets w a live show. You do not get that on most commercially released albums.

I agree on the live stuff, which is why I love "archive.org". Regarding The Man from God Knows Where, I assume the live version you listened to didn't have the songs with vocals from Iris DeMent and an Irish female singer whose name I forget, plus Dave Van Ronk. I'll never forget going to see a show with John Prine and Steve Goodman (both acoustic, and both on stage at the same time the entire show). 1972 I think (maybe 71), Dallas Texas at the old Majestic Theatre (before being refurbished) in downtown. I've see Prine many times since, but that was it for Goodman. He was good and a class act!

review from the All Music website. Jimmy Newman by Tom Paxton is quite good and a bit out of character from my perspective. Old Town in that era was somewhat like Greenwich Village. Not sure what it is like today. The collaborattions w John Prine are quite nice as you mentioned. There were many songs w messages back then. People used music to be heard. A wild and crazy time. Glad I was around to see the little I did. I still remember where I was on the wknd of Woodstock, working at the beach on Long Island not far away. Also in my mind the golden era of FM radio.

Listening to Steve Goodman reminded me of his song "You Better get It While You Can" The Ballad of Carl Martin. An album from 1978 "That Old Gang Of Mine" by Martin Bogan and Armstrong an old time string band. The Martin is Carl Martin. Steve Goodman's endorsement is good enough for me. It's a delightful album of old timey stuff w wonderful instruentation. Howard Armstrong of the same group did an album called Louie Bluie which is quite good as well.
Hope all this reference to older music doesn't scare the younger set off. It's well worth a listen.

the new Esparanza Spalding " Radio Music Society " .
At first I thought it a little bland, but it grows on you :) the songs gets better every listen.
Perfectly acceptable sound quality to ? Cool .
Many modern recordings when not suffering from loudness war also have overemphasised mid treble screechy harsh and paper thin sound, not this one, it's even a bit creamy ?
In a perfect world it would have had some more " air " and dynamics bass is not as tranpararant as it could be, but it good enough to let you listen to the music without fuzzing over the sq and that in itself is exceptional .
( can not get that sound ideal where all midrange and treble sounds like coaxial/one-way car speakers, but immensely popular around modern producers , ariry and 3 dimensional you say what ? Why do drummers even care for the brand of cymbals, modern producers makes it sound like tin foil anyway ).

Yea, but I only meant some mild criticism , the recording is actually very very good just crank up the volume :)
The bass is very slightly r&b inspired ( r&b usually sounds thump pfff in the bass with no way discern any instruments there )
But her playing comes trough good.
Maybe the young lady has her hearing intact ? ( Many pro musicians are semi deaf for natural reasons ) .
So maybe ms Spalding was present during the production.
A natural paradox young ladies has the best hearing and is the most unlikely person to be an audiophile .
I put Linda Ronstadt's old "What's New" recording together with Paul McCartney's new "Kisses On The Bottom". Both of them are interpretations of standards; Linda is working with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra, Paul is working with Diana Krall and her band. Musicianship is really top notch.
Randomized the playlist, and enjoyed two very different but very enjoyable takes on similar music.
They're both great recordings, but I'd have to give the edge to McCartney. Of course, there is almost thirty years between these records, and when Ronstadt did it it was a New Thing.
You'll hate the McCartney if you're expecting Beatles or Wings.

This is an odd one, but very compelling.
Basically, this is a kind of Danish folk trio (Basco) joined by three horn players (Big Basco). The base trio plays violin, viola, accordion and trombone; for Big Basco it is supplemented by two french horns and a helicon (the kind of tuba that wraps around the player).
They play a variety of music, ranging from English folk tunes through Scandinavian folk to jazz to elements of classical. Mainly instrumental, but do sing in English and Danish. The sound is great and the musicianship absolutely stellar.
See them on Facebook at http://da-dk.facebook.com/Bascoband?v=info, the album streams from there.

Lover Over and Over, the tribute concert to Kate McGarrigle a couple of months ago at Toronto's Massey Hall. Her kids Rufus and Martha Wainwright and her sister Anna performed, along with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, Ron Sexsmith, Teddy Thompson, Peggy Seeger, etc. Really nice. Very well recorded.
It's posted on the CBC Concerts On Demand site, at http://music.cbc.ca/#/concerts/Love-Over-and-Over-A-Tribute-to-Kate-McGarrigle-2012-06-15. I listened to it streamed, but also captured it via ReplayMediaCapture. I don't feel too guilty, as the stream is only 128kbps. Had to do all the manual business of tagging the files, etc, but it's nice to have to listen to in the car.
I don't think the Concerts On Demand part of their site is geo-fenced.
I recommend RMC4 as a useful tool for capturing the audio portions of video streams, or radio streams. Works very well, accesses the root file directly and does not rely on a computer sound card. Will typically capture an individual song stream within about 15 or 30 seconds, while the song is playing. You can then click on another track to download, don't have to listen to the whole thing to capture.

It's what happens when you have a thread labeled ". . . right now"! Enthusiasm of the moment and all. It was dynamite to my ears at the time, and still sounds pretty darned good. Perhaps not for purist bluegrassers, but I did say it was filtered through English folk to some degree.
A similar filtering happens with the group Annie Lou, which brings a wholesome Canadian perspective (and accent) to the bluegrass genre. I really like the new recording Grandma's Rules for Drinking ("dynamite" applies). Listening to it now, at www.annielou.ca.

It has mono and stereo versions, the Norman Dolph acetates and two CDs from the Valleydale Ballroom set. I guess it's one for the completists!
This has changed my Last.FM profile slightly!

Great stuff haven't bought yet but love my older VU box set and have some of the boots. Looking forward to hearing it.

Curiously, I was listening to "Tales Of Mystery And Imagination" last week (APP first album). This is one of my favourite APP albums, as it has a bit of everything, and a strong theme.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guitar_Trio there were only two albums, the other being Passion, Grace and Fire. Guitar Trio is my first introduction to these players together and Paco de Lucía has been unknown to me till now.

Thanks for that I will check it out. In a quite different vein I am listening on Squeezeplay at this moment to:
8. Two Rivers
Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop (1989)
Jeff Beck, Jeff Beck with Terry Bozzio & Tony Hymas
This is one of my favorite guitar tracks by a guitar genius
edit: On impulse just visited Amazon and purchased Friday Night In San Francisco, Love Devotion Surrender and Thieves And Poets
With what's probably a slightly blaspheming statement I have to point out that I do indeed find Skrillex to be a hardcore version of Charles Mingus. Both really help me to focus if being played loud.

This is a Jerry Douglas album with guest performers. Jerry Douglas, Mumford & Sons, and Paul Simon perform this track.

The first two are easy, the third took quite a bit of thought :-)
Almost Famous!
Although there was a real band called Stillwater in the '70s with a song named "Mindbender".

There are several compilations of Bills music available on Black Mountain Underground. Currently listening to v4. Its a treat as there is not much of his music available outside of official releases. There are numerous compilations of other artists as well. Worth a peek.

Fantastic!

A terrific album - I have the original vinyl LP plus the CD as well as FLAC on the server (which I'm just gonna fire up now ... ).
"Passion Grace and Fire" is also a beaut - haven't listened to it for ages, so thanks for the reminder :-)
Have been listening to Joe Cocker's latest "Fire It Up" which is much better than some previous work (although ""Across From Midnight" is still my favourite).
Plus (surprisingly) Anastacia's latest "It's A Man's World" which is all covers but has an interesting take on Zep's "Ramble On" and Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Having said that, Oasis' "Wonderwall" was always a cr*p song and her version is no better...
Thank you and good night.
