You have to open your spotify program. Click on What's New and at the bottom of the screen under Feed, click on any of the Spotify links. This will give you a list of published playlists to which you can subscribe or you can check out any of the subscribers to that playlist and see what playlists they have created. Once you find the playlist you are interested in, just copy the url and paste it into the Spotify URL field on your server.
I haven't linked my account to Facebook yet, but I imagine that would be another good way to find playlists...

Aha. I see I can pick other users as well and see what their playlists are. I suppose I should make some playlists and publish them as well....

Mnyb, Good stuff. I saw her perform last year at a small venue in NYC with a great female fiddle player...

That "great female fiddle player" would be Tania Elizabeth, ex of grammy-nominated The Duhks. She is an amazing wonder. When I saw them in Toronto, Tania looked much younger than her age (ca 27), probably a reflection of her vegan raw-food diet. Mary looked more fit and relaxed than I've seen her before, perhaps due to touring with the health-foodist Tania.

In any event, I think Tania has been a great big part of Mary's recent work, and is all over the CD as well as the live shows.

For those who haven't heard her, Tania's very versatile. She comes out of the Western Canadian Metis (mixed Europpean/native) fiddle tradition, and can play trad music of the most complex kind with her eyes closed. She also can be much more contemporary in her approach when warranted, and on Mary's recording really pushes the boundaries, with some aggressive emotional growling fiddle work. If you're the kind of listener who waits for the fiddle lines, you'll love Mary's recent CD.

No leak. Here in germany it was released on friday and amazon shipped my deluxe edition already on thursday.

Didn't know what to expect without Portnoy but after listening to the album i'm really surprised. It sounds fresh, you here Myung's bass play again and he wrote the lyrics on one song again. Looks as if Mike controlled the band.

For me there is only one filler on the cd, Far From Heaven, a ballad. James voice is simply great. Have to wait if he can do that live. On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 the highest rating, i would give it a 9.

I've been listening to this on Spotify the past week. At first it didn't grab me - it seemed to be lacking something. Over a few listens it has really grown on me. Portnoy's drums in the forefront was strarting to wear thin with me, as was Petrucci seemingly trying to win a speed playing contest. The album does sound fresh yet still being faithful to the Dream Theater sound. I like it enough that I ordered the CD/DVD from Amazon.

Mangini had some huge shoes to fill. His playing didn't jump out at me like "my god, he's awesome!". However, his playing fits in with the other guys without hitting you in the face - that's actually saying something:-).

It will be interesting to hear how Mangini handles the back catalog when the band tours.

All in all, DT has proved themselves to be more than just Portnoy. I hope he's enjoying his sabbatical ;-).

Not to toally diss Portnoy - he is a fantastic drummer. I just didn't like how his playing was in your face with the last few albums.

Ijust love Zunior, but I usually post it as zunior.com, in order to avoid Canada-rejection on the part of parochial readers. Both work.

It's an excellent resource for the best of Canadian independent music, and offers both quite high-quality MP3 versons of titles, as well as flac versions at a $2 premium. Given that the base price is $8.88, that's a good deal.

BTW, there is a new Ohbijou CD released just yesterday, Sept 27, called Metal Meets. Haven't actually got it yet, but it is allegedly great.

Don't Explain -- Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart.

Man, where have these guys been all my life? Absolutely outstanding. Although it sort of trivializes the music to say it, I can easily imagine Beth Hart as being where Janis Joplin might have been if she'd survived. If she'd acquired discipline.

I just love this CD.

PS -- those Canadians of a certain vintage may flash to Carole Pope and Rough Trade when listening to this recording. But with more discipline (and no, I don't have a discipline fetish, although with Carole that might be apt).

Frisell is/was a member of Buddy Miller's Majestic Silver Strings -- he can float with the greatest of ease from pure jazz through rock and pop to country-informed roots. His "Greatest Hits Vol 1" essentially covered folk/country instumental versions. It's all wonderful.

Feist's new album, Metals.

The NY Times calls it her best yet, so I'll give it time. I've been a fan since long before the Apple ad, but am not yet sure about the new one.

Hallucinogenic story:

I listened to her first (commercially successful) recording, Let It Die, a whole lot when it first came out, since it was a great recording and she is a nice Toronto girl attached to the wonder that is Broken Social Scene. But it hadn't exactly broken worldwide.

Was in Rome working, totaly jet-lagged, two in the morning or something, mindlessly twirling through the (totally mindless) Italian tv channels, and came across a music video program, done at the lowest possible budget. Ratty couch, weird cartoon graphics, un-witty* repartee entirely in Italian, etc. And what do they play? Feist's low-cost video of Mushaboom.

Culture shock came around and hit me in the face.

SWMBO is immersed in Emmerdale (a UK TV soap) so I've plugged my cans into the Controller and am headbangin' on my Chesterfield here in the study to the latest Wishbone Ash album "Elegant Stealth". Forgot how good these guys were / still are! Grew up with them and still have the early stuff on vinyl.

Then some Mariza or maybe Shakatak to go with the steaks and Douro red for dinner.

It's a tough life this retirement ... !

Evidently you have one of those gold-plated pensions ... and can't resist gloating about it, either. Too much time on your hands, I fear.

Ouch! Have I inadvertently / unintentionally touched a nerve here?

Would that any part of your comment was true:-

>"gold plated" - I wish ...

>"can't resist gloating about it" - what? Not sure where you're located but my Douro red cost around €3 euros a bottle and the sirloin steaks around twice that (some things in Portugal are cheaper than others)

>"Too much time on your hands, I fear" - before I retired I was concerned that this might be true, but my days are full, just not at the ridiculous pace that they used to be (I spent 30 years in the computer industry so figure what that's been through since the early 70s)

Wherever you're posting from, you probably know that this little country Portugal is in deep financial doo-doos, so please don't begrudge me a little musical escape with a glass or two of wine whilst I cruise this august forum.

But apologies if you feel it necessary and/or feel offended.

Anyway, last night I chased down the glögg with some untainted red wine from Goats Do Roam and settled in to listen to Nilsson Schmilsson (http://www.amazon.com/Nilsson-Schmilsson-Harry/dp/B000159ELA). David Gogo, Soul Bender -- really really good guitarist in the rock/blues tradition. If you like the Joe Bonamassa/Beth Hart CD, you'll like this one -- it's rockier and maybe even higher energy, but in the same direction.

Austra, Feel it Break -- Austra is a band from Toronto. Definitely an of-the-moment group, usually classified as Club or Electronica. Vocals from Katie Stelmanis are operatic; beats and electronics make it very danceable. The overall feel to me has more than a bit of classic prog rock going for it.

For The Good Times (The Little Willies)

I enjoy both of these very different recordings. Rome is a kind of riff on the music of spaghetti westerns, lots of string sounds, electronics, atmospherics. For The Good Times is basically a sophisticated re-interpretation of classic country songs.

The whiplash effect is from the prominent presence of Norah Jones on both of them. A credit to her personal range.

the definitive version. and Kris Kristofferson (the songwriter) wrote some unbelievably good songs. His early stuff is classic. "Sunday Mornin' Coming Down"

Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes,
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
An' I shaved my face and combed my hair,
An' stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

Having picked up my guitar playing again, I've been listening to some SRV again (somehow I find it inspiring rather than deflating - the man was an INCREDIBLE player). A friend of mine lent me the DVDs of these shows from '82 and '85. I learned some history - SRV was booed at his first appearance there. At the time, he wasn't signed to a label and was a relative unknown. They put him in a lineup with acoustic acts. SRV and company ripped it up despite the hostile crowd. How things changed by the time he played there again in '85.

He was such a physical player. Drummers normally sweat to death. SRV's drummer didn't break a sweat. SRV, however, looked like he just took a shower by the end of the show.

How sad that we lost him.

Not to highjack the thread, but what is the bit rate of Mp3 D/L off amazon. NVM I just dug a little deeper and found it 256kbs

things I've bought tend to be 256 CBR or LAME mp3 encodes that are probably -V0 or -V1. Not consistent from album to album, that's for sure, but all reasonably high bitrates.

The performance of Rhaposdy in Blue/Concerto in F/Cuban Overture with John Nakamatsu and the Rochester Philharmonic is also very well regarded and is available in 24/96 download from HD Tracks (I have it and the engineering/audio quality is first-rate).

Hehe - you're toying with me now aren't you. How many of these do you think I'm going to buy?

I'm almost tempted to try the HD Tracks download though. Not particularly interested in the 24-bit version, but the 16/44 FLAC works out the same price as the Amazon MP3 album download. It's a pity neither service offers 'Rhapsody in Blue' as an individual download.

That's the one ! I bought the album just after it came out.

So many versions of RIB are jaunty rather than jazzy and the Adagio of this Concerto in F has never been bettered: the horns' "slur" is incredible.

I am mostly comparing the RIB to the mechanical recordings played by George himself.

(The cover changed when they made the CD.)

Glad you are enjoying it. My younger brother says I have very eclectic tastes in music and he's pretty openminded-a design engineer at D'addario-one of the,if not the largest musical string mfrs. located on Long Island.

Caught Steve Earle, his wife Allison Moorer at City Winery in NYC last Monday night. If you're a Steve Earle fan (and I am) it is a great casual acoustic show. They are playing there every Monday I believe for a few weeks (always with someone sitting in with them for some songs...on Monday they had "The Mastersons" - a husband and wife who happen to be guitarists, fiddle, singers, etc. that play in Steve's full band as well (The Dukes & Duchesses)....caught the full band in Minneapolis last summer).

City Winery is a great small venue by the way....

Andre Previn w/London Symphony (1971) is the best.

I'm fond of the version of Rhapsody In Blue on the 1983 LA Philharmonic/Leonard Bernstein recording. The Rhapsody is great, and there is a really fine version of Barber's Adagio for Strings. Bernstein plays piano, and he is a revelation.

My wife loves the tv show GLEE (and shes a 50+ year old woman!). But last night she was watching a saved episode (where they do michael jackson music) and I heard something familar. Walking into the room, I noticed two guys on cello in the scene. Googled it and sure enough "2 Cellos" were guesting on GLEE. Good for them....I hope they get some sales out of it...
