does anyone know how Foobar2000 works with TPE2?

does it treat it as band or albumartist?

is it configurable to either? can it only do one or the other, or both at the same time?

Good question. Not really sure to be honest. I'd need to experiment a bit to test this. In foobar (using FACETS, which makes foobar much more user friendly for me), I've set up columns to show metadata. I have the following three columns defined:

BAND - [%band%] (note the [] simply tell it to be blank if value missing)
ALBUMARTIST - [%albumartist%]
ALBUM ARTIST - [%album artist%]

I do notice that if there is no "album artist" field in my tags, that foobar will automatically report the ARTIST info in the ALBUM ARTIST column.

Foobar2000 always treats TPE2 as Band. "ALBUM ARTIST" (a custom tag) should be used for holding an Album Artist name.

Note that Foobar2000 will display the artist name automatically in an album artist field if there isn't an "ALBUM ARTIST" tag.

Note that Foobar2000 can be configured to show "title / track artist", and "artist / album". If there is an ALBUM ARTIST, it will show the title and track artist, and album artist / album name, otherwise it will show artist and album. This avoids having to show 4 columns all the time - produces a more concise display.

Of course you can configure it to display artist, album, track artist, title as separate columns too.

thx for the info guys...

its for someone else tho, i don't use foobar2000.

in a perfect world, there should be a dedicated frame by spec for AA, but given the state of things, i'm surprised fb2k doesn't at least have the option to configure TPE2 treatment, like SBS does; but perhaps it wants to be more mp3tag-ish.

thats actually an on/off toggle in winamp. it controls how the winamp DB reports it, but doesn't actually alter the tag. i keep that and all the related tag "guessing" stuff off in winamp.

correction:

I have made a workaround in my Foobar installation by setting the album artist tag to read/write BAND tag, and now it works just as Winamp. Files are now read correctly across both these programs.

http://www.foobar2000.org/changelog

so now the last holdout i knew of, is no more. fb2k including and greater than 1.1.6 maps AA to TPE2 by default.
