I have created several m4a files with following specs:

But SBS Version: 7.5.1 - r30844 (linux) doesnt see the files during a scan. Why not?

The files play fine in any other software player i throw at it (itunes,cog,winamp etc).

Similar bug has been noted before, for alac encoded by max, see http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8785.

You could try to encode to alac using something other than max.
