View Full Version : 7.5.1 won't scan

I was running 7.4.1 on my ReadyNAS. It performed fine as a Squeeze server and I never would have upgraded were it not for the fact that it was sending over 1000 DNS requests per minute to my ISP's DNS server.

So I upgraded to 7.5.1. Now it will not finish a scan. Every scan begins with an incorrect enumeration of the number of files it has to process, and it stops at a random file and will not restart. The scan logs contain almost no information. To get it to re-scan I have to run the Clean Squeezecenter program (blowing away all the data). It then repeats its performance, stopping at a different point.

I'm preparing to downgrade back to 7.4.1, but I thought I'd give these forums a shot first.

Any ideas?

G.

you need to turn on scan logging and see what is written to scanner.log

you need to turn on scan logging and see what is written to scanner.log

It's on, and it contains no useful info - just a short list of files that were scanned.

Edit: here are the total contents of the log file. Note "Found 1537 files"... there are over 5000 files in that directory tree. Each time I clear the data and restart it finds a different number of files:

Maybe re-install 7.5.1 and try again?

If you want to see a real scanning mess, try 7.6.0 ;)

LOL! Not sure I want to know how much worse it could get...

Are you by any chance Swedish? I have a vague memory of someone else having similar problems.... caused by special characters in filenames/directories - æøåäö etc...

One guy started chasing the offending tracks and modifying their names one by one.

I might be mixing threads up here...

I have no ready NAS experience, but is upgrading really recommended ?
I think the download page states that you should remove the old one forst.

Clean install works best in some linux/NAS situations.

Deleting the cache folder may help .

I have had weird experiences on my linux server with some upgrades where the old databse basically corrupts any attempts to rebuild it to the new standard. Ands sometimes the prefs files have to go also.

Or worse the old SBS/SS/SC is not properly removed (but that was 7.3 to 7.4 right ?) leaving all kind of crud.

What anti-virus software are you running ?

It's possible, however the scanning worked without flaw in the previous version.

I definitely never upgrade software unless I have to. I was doing so because the previous version I was running was flooding my network (and that of my provider) with spurious DNS queries - well over a thousand of them a minute, 24/7. I followed the recommended upgrade method, including the clean process before the removal of the previous version and after the installation of the new one.

Could it be a permissions issue? It used to be that user:squeezeserver needed read permission - now it is user:squeezeboxserver.

IIRC that change happened between the 7.4 and 7.5 branches - could be related?

Is this true also on the ReadyNAS version? Do these permissions often get screwed up on a clean load?

I'm not familiar enough with the ReadyNAS build to say - but if the correct user doesn't have read access to your files, the scan won't work. The standard Linux software installation creates the user but doesn't change the permissions on the files. That said, the ReadyNAS build is a total installation package like Vortexbox - so it may do something different.

Can you check the permissions on an individual file? Also, may be worth manually deleting the cache files and rebuilding the database completely in case the database is corrupted and that is what is stopping the scan from completing.

It's possible. I'd love a definitive answer from the developers. I just tried it again - and again, 7.5.1 won't scan my library, while 7.4 breezes through it no problem. I even tried removing special characters from songs - made no difference.

Frustrating, because I'd like to take advantage of some of the new features and can't. Am I the only one with this issue? I'm running the server on the ReadyNAS.

you might also try posting in the readynas forums. They might have more specific insights into your issue. Obviously, here and there might drum up some answers. It would be useful to know whether others are getting good scans with 7.5.1 with readynas. I can't recall whether you noted which readynas (some are x86 some not)

Edit: oops, it appears you already have done so. p.s. I have a readynas duo, but it was so underpowered I abandoned its use as a server running SbS almost immediately. Worked fine for streaming, but navigating UI was waaaaaay too painful.

I have the Pro Business (x86). Yeah, posts about squeezebox don't get answered often there.

I had the same problem with sbs 7.5.1, scan aborted very early. Did a clean sweep and rolled back to 7.5.0 and scan was just fine. Use the ready NAS duo to host my music.

Would recommend you roll back and wait for a better version.

Precisely what I did - went back to v7.4.

Same here. I had the same aborted scan problem with no diagnostics. It couldn't have been a antivirus problem because it's running on a server with no antivirus software. Finally downgraded to 7.5.0 and everything worked fine. Just waiting on 7.6 to get the bugs out and I'll try again.

I am having a problem today scanning my library; it says scanning was stopped abruptly by iTunes Import. I have SS 7.5.1 and has been working fine since I installed it months ago. I installed iTunes 10 yesterday, would that be the reason for the error? Where can I get a previous version of SS just in case?
