Let's tackle these (from my viewpoint) one at a time...

You need to figure out what the permissions and owner situation
for slimserver and all the directories associated with it are.
They either need to be owned by slimserver user or at least
in the group (and have the app be executable by the same
group. Root makes sense because it can run everything. Not
a good idea as this can cause other bad things to happen.

No switch will tell you if you are having a permissions problem.
From what you describe, you definitely are having a permissions
problem.
>also, i've got all my mp3's on a snap server on my network.

2 issues: snap server and moodlogic.
Snap server - is your linux box able to see the snap server? Is it
able to nfs mount the drive, preferably through automount is the
/etc/fstab file? If not, slim never will see it.
Moodlogic - the only way you have moodlogic support is unfortunately
if you run slimserver on a windows machine. The folks at moodlogic
don't feel that us paying customers running slim on linux warrant the
development effort to put moodlogic on linux. Send e-mails to
moodlogic and let them know linux deserves moodlogic as well. I
don't think the tradeoff of running slim on windows with moodlogic
vs. linux without moodlogic is worth it, but I guess that's because
I use moodlogic mostly on my Archos. If my wife started using
moodlogic at home, I'd be writing to moodlogic every day complaining
to the to get a linux version.
