Went to my sisters for a family Christmas gathering today. Took the SBC and used it to stream music from my server. I know what my bro-in-law wants for Christmas now :-) Is that mean or what...

Ah, another convert! :-).

Anybody that has a moderate interest in listening to music and appreciates technology cannot resist the squeezebox family of products. And has been said by another member here a number of times, squeezeboxes are like potato chips...you can't just have one!

For people like my brother, cost is still a barrier of entry. But that is changing too...

If he gets one, you realize that you will own the setup and be the first to be called when issues arise :-).

Not mean at all; I'm sure he'll thank you when he's bought his 5th SB...

But can you explain a bit more about what you did; are you saying you took your SBC (only) and connected back to you home server over the internet..? Or you took your server with you and accessed it locally?

Yep, took just the SBC and went through my sisters wireless to my SC at home. We listened to my files through the SBC and his stereo.

You need to do a couple of things. First you have to open two ports on your router. 9000 and another I can't remember off the top of my head, but someone else will tell us or I can look this evening. Then you'll need your WAN ip address. On your SBC you'll need to put in the appropriate network settings for where ever you are or if you use DHCP the SBC should set up automatically. Then go to settings and music source. Choose music server and when the SBC asks you for your music server address put your home ip address in there. That's pretty much it.

Have fun,

Howard

P.S. SC has a setting for security so you can password protect it. I didn't set mine because I wasn't sure how it would react to the SBC, but I did have some issues with just having security turned on and not being able to update to new SC versions with it on. I just turn on the router ports when I'm going out with a SB.

Do you happen to know... Would the SBC controller work with Slacker (via SN) away from home without having to open my server up to the net? I might just try it...

Yep, as a matter of fact the last time I went over there I took the boom and used SN to go to Rhapsody, Pandora and Slacker. It even easier to do that SC.

Very cool. What you're describing here sounds like magic. Actually, most Squeezebox technology strikes me as magic.

When you say I need my WAN IP address, what does this mean exactly? I need to have a publicly available IP address, right? I can't just use the 192.168.x.x that my Linksys router is handing out -- everyone has that. Are you using something like DNS2Go, or am I missing something here?

There's lots of places to find you ip. whatsmyipaddress.com works fine, but there are tons of other. If you don't pay for a static ip with your isp, the address will change occassionally, but not very often. Just double check it before you head out for the day.

I can't seem to connect my Controller to SN. When I set controller as player, SN is not available in the music sources menu. When I log on to SN and click on players, it is showing as connected, but it is not in the drop down menu of players. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing?

Oops, sorry. SBC as a player will not be able to connect to SN. I was using my BOOM when I did it.

Take your BOOM :-)

Yeah, I couldn't get it to play Slacker even through SC. It appears to be working but no sound comes out. (I do get sound for local files, tho.)

I'm only going to be gone 2 nights and we already have quite a haul, so I will probably just have to settle for the PDA... and be sociable. ;-)

Sue, what SC version are you on? When I took mine I was on one of the 7.3 SC beta versions. Whatever came out right before Thanksgiving.

Hope you're staying in Florida. The rest of us are pretty cold right now :-)

I'm running 7.3.1 from a few days ago... was about to try updating it.

Edit: No Windows build of 7.3.1 today. Drat.

I had the A/C running yesterday but today it's "only" 50. Looks like it going to get hot again before Christmas. Bleh. Hey, you brought it up... ;-)

I back loaded the update from around the middle of Decemeber. I can check which one whan I get home. It was the one that worked the best for me for everything.

It was a sweltering 15 degrees here this morning so I'm not jealous.................much!

Hi Howard - any update on the other port that needs to be opened? Hoping to give this a spin this weekend.

Thanks!

First, thanks p-cubed. I could not find that article to save my life. AJ, the two ports are 9000 and 3483, but you need to be certain to forward those posts to the ip address of your SC and not just open them (yet another good reason to use static ip on your home network). Also, set up a password in SC (settings/squeeze network) for networking when you have the forwarding on.

As a side note, I find when the password security is enabled in SC, that SC doesn't like to be updated, so make sure to turn the password off *before* updating SC versions. I don't know if everyone has an issue with that, but I most definitely do.

Have fun

Howard
