View Full Version : Updating to 7.3 on a Mac: experiences/tips please
I wonder if anyone with a Mac (running OS 10.5.5) has bitten the bullet yet, and updated to 7.3. In the recent past there have been some Mac-only bugs that have come to light after updating (and particularly when scanning). I was wondering if 7.3 is proving to be a painless choice.
I you have updated to 7.3, could you share your experiences with the rest of us Mac users, like me, who are too cowardly to dip our toes into uncharted waters?
I'm running 7.3 on my mini for over a month now, without any serious problem.
I encountered some kind of bug a couple of times, where my classic wouldn't respond to its IR remote any more, and I had to restart SC to get the control back. I wouldn't swear it's a Mac-only bug, anyway.
For the scanning issues, I'm using FLAC exclusively, no iTunes in the loop, so never had any trouble with previous releases. YMMV.

Snoogly,
I just upgraded from SC 7.2.1 to 7.3.0 this morning, and I've had no problems at all. I'm running SC on a 10.5.5 Mac Mini, and I have a Boom and a SB3. I removed my manually installed SuperDateTime, AlienBBC, and Music Information Screen plugins and reinstalled them via the new "Extension Downloader". This worked fine - no problems.
Regards,
Steve
I've been using the 7.3 nightlies for a while, the only thing I've had to do on occasion is to manually stop Squeezcenter before installing. You can do this from the System Preferences pane.
Other than that, it seems to be working fine at the moment (7.3 - 23938)
I tried to upgrade from 7.2.1 to 7.3 yesterday and 7.3 wouldn't start. The install seemed to "complete" way too quickly, so I was pretty sure something hadn't worked correctly. I ended up having to uninstall everything and do a fresh install. Bit of a pain, but the new install seems to be working fine.

The same happened on my Mac. In Activity Monitor I see Perl start up then terminate. I do get fed up with this sometimes. I've had several bad installs since I've had a SB. I do love the SB but if I didn't have such a persistent nature and a little technical know-how I would have given up with the SB long ago. My mate isn't technically savvy and he's given up trying to get his SB working and is waiting for me to visit him to get it working!.
I do think software upgrades should be made more reliable for folk who don't know the workings of a computer. And maybe a few notes in the install package to advise when things go wrong. Like how to completely remove SC. These things sound simple to the majority of us but they're not for many people.
Off now to completely remove SC and resinstall everything from scratch.

I noticed the official 7.3 release and was really keen to upgrade as I wanted the Controller player functionality.
After seeing all the problems people are having on the forums I was pretty reluctant but couldn't wait any longer and decided to give it a go tonight.
I upgraded 7.2.1 to 7.3 on a Mac Mini running 10.5.5. No problems to report with upgrade. It installed and began rescanning the library. At the same time I upgraded the firmwares on all players.
I have 2 SB's, a Boom and a Duet. All players upgraded fine as far as I can tell. All are working, including the Controller player feature. It took me a while to find the setting to turn that on though.
Perhaps one thing that I have which may be considered non-standard is that the music library is located on a ReadNAS NV+ and I am not running iTunes integration.
Some of my plugins report that they are not compatible and that I should update them. I'll get around to that tomorrow.
So far so good.
